| Transcript | sanfrancisco [san francisco?] California november the 24th 1872 Dear mother I recieved [received?] your letter it was sent to me from auburn I was glad to hear that you got the money I came here about 2 months ago to this city I am not doing much of any thing yet I am glad to hear that you are still to the fore I had my likness taken since I came here I will send it to you this time it is a small one I may send you a larger one some time I wrote a letter to my son about 3 weeks ago I let him know that if he had any intention of coming to this country that I would try and help him some I do not know what is best for me to do I see times is very poor in ireland this season on the account of the failure of crops dear mother if you need any money any time I will send you some I need say no more to you this time I hope god will be with you I remain your loving son James Gamble. dear friends patrick abel thomas and sarah this county california is a fine warm county and pretty hethey [healthy?] there is a good deal of farming going on in the valleys there is some places so dry the [they?] have to cut ditches and fetch water to iregegate [irrigate?] it but in oregon it rains more the country is more damper and colder in winter than here the state of oregon and washington territory is very good farming countries a man can get land to buy pretty reasonable or rent or work on shares or any way. there is some coming from the atlantic states here and some going back some does well in one place and some does better in another it would take more money to come here to the pacific coast than to the atlantic states the passage alone from new york here is fifty dollars and to go to oregon fifteen more and to washington a little more it takes the train about seven days to come from new york here passengers has to pay for there [their?] board on the train besides if any of you comes here or where I may be I would like well to see you I am thankful to sarah for the present I need say no more this I remain your affectionate friend James Gamble address James Gamble united states hotel sanfrancisco [san francisco?] california |
