Transcript | [Front of envelope] [Stamped] Newtownstewart 10 0 MR 4 97 [Postage Stamp underneath] Postage & Revenue 2 ½ Mr James Alex Smyth Essex Essex Co Ontario Canada [Back of envelope] [Stamped] Plumbridge E MR 4 97 [Stamped] Essex MR 19 97 ONT [Page 1] Castledamph March 3rd 1897 Dear Cousin In answer to your letter which I received a few days ago was glad to hear from you once more that is a new game you have got over there I suppose you had a good time sleighing this winter we had not much of a winter here this year but I think we are going to [Page 2] have a storm of snow now it is snowing away this couple of days but I hope it will soon go away it would not be good for the sheep now as it is time they were going to the glen there is no lambs around here yet The labour is very far back yet I think the crops will be late this year if the weather does not dry up soon you talk about not being hard on the young ladies well you are right there but I would [Page 3] not like to let them fool me too far I forgive them for what they done but I will not forget for a while they were up in our house on Tuesday night Mary was talking about [getting?] a letter from you and not answering it yet but she says she will answer it soon There is a great change on them since they closed the door on us if we went down now I think it would not be closed [Page 4] John Chas [Charles?] is a splendid player on the Violin he has quite a lot tunes and can Play them well he learned very quick Willie John is getting along very well he did not commence the violin yet but he can play the trump [trumpet] very well he says he wrote a letter to you and he never got an answer yet he thinks you forgot all about him. There is lot of people dying around here this year Grandfather is not too well this last week or two. [Page 5] I am ashamed of not having that money paid before this but I will give it to them the next time they are sending thing [sic] to you I got the Rosette for you will send it in this letter your own ones is sending the shamrock in a newspaper the daffodil is not blowed yet it will not be sent for a while yet [Page 8] There is quite a lot of songs a making here now there is a new one bade on a Party James Campbell had the gordons and the Dunbars from LetterBratt was all was at it it was on a Sunday Evening I only saw it once so I dont mind much on it but I will tell you some of it next time there is great anger about it the gordons is very bad about it there was a very bad one made on the duncans Hoping this letter will find you well No more at present But remains your cousin W G [William Gilkinson?] Transcribed by Chris Devenney |
