Transcript | [Front of envelope] Mr James A Smyth South Woodslee Essex Essex Co Ontario Canada [Stamped] NEWTOWNSTEWART PM 10 0 DE 23 97 [Written at top in pencil] Ans [Answered?] Feb 13 98 [Back of envelope] [Stamped] ESSEX JA 6 98 ONT [Stamped] [PLUMBRIDGE?] DE [2-?] 97 [Stamped] [-----?] [--?] Castledamph Dec 23rd 1897 Dear Cousin In answer to your letter which I received a few weeks ago was glad to hear from you again we are all well here at present but William was not very well a while Back. but he is alright now we have very nice weather here now there has been no snow this year yet and it seems we will have a green Xmas [page 2] The People around here are getting their rents settled now They are getting 4/- and 5/- to the £ of a reduction we will only be £4.5 [£4.5s.0d?] instead of £5.10s it is better than going to the courts We are getting £40 for the road this time far more than we expected although the road never was in better order it was the County Surveyor measured the material and he cut us 30 cubit yards but he made a mistake somehow we measured it all ourselves and we had a few yards too much [page 3] Alexander Stuart is going to leave Landahussey [Landahussy?] he has bought a farm up at Omagh he paid £700 for it he is going to sell Big Williams on the 27th inst There is a very large Sunday School in Castledamph school there is about 70 in attendance it is a fine time for courting as it is very dark when we are getting home we miss the Dunbars very much since they left we have no fun now at all we had a letter from them yesterday morning [page 4] She likes the school well it is a better school than Eden She has no bother but take her meals and go in and out as she likes. I believe you have sent your Picture to Miss Ballantine at least she told Maggie McFarland so and that she is keeping all your letters what she means by telling all this I dont know I see by your letter home you are getting a good many holidays at Xmas.
