Transcript | [Front of envelope] Mr James A Smyth Southwoodslee Essex Co Ontario Canada [Stamped] NEWTOWNSTEWART PM 10 0 AU 17 99 [Back of envelope] [Postmarked] PLUMBRIDGE AU 17 99 [Postmarked] SOUTH WOODSLEE [----?] ONT [Page 1] Castledamph August 6th 1899 Dear Cousin It is such a long time since I have written to you now you will think I have forgot you alltogether [altogether?] was going to write every week this long time but always put it off from time to [time?] I suppose by the time you get this letter you will know how you have done at your examination [Page 2] I hope you have passed allright [alright?]this time it must be very wearisome to be constantly at the books but you will have pleasure for all your pains yet I see you had not much of a day on the 12 July this year we had a very good time here only it was so far away and that spoils the whole thing They are talking about going to Derry again the 12 August there is going to be a great day in it but they are not all for going [Page 3] however there is a few of us intends to go [let?] the Orangemen go or not it would be a sight to see Derry if nothing else I suppose you have heard about Joe getting married he must have been in a worse way than any of the rest of us when he was in such a hurry We had very nice weather here this summer most of the hay is all saved at present I never saw it getting better weather [Page 4] this day looks like a change there is thunder and lightening [lightning?] and some very heavy rain. The crops look very good about here this year the corn is all lying today with the rain. Dr Conan is dead at last he has been very ill for the last two or three months he died on the 4th inst and will be buried on the 9th They are waiting for the Son-in-Law to come from London We are all well here at present I will be expecting a letter from you soon No more at present But remains Your Cousin Willie Gilkison [Page 5] August 17th I received your letter today was glad to hear from you again I had part of this letter wrote last week but did not post it W.J. Duncan arrived here last week but I have not seen him yet The [They?] say he looks very thin There has been terrible roits [riots?] in Derry on the 12 August or rather the 13th but you will see it all in the Papers as they have sent you a [few?] yesterday [Page 6] I did not get going to Derry on the twelfth as the rest all went so I had to stay at home. Big Joe Duncan got his leg broken yesterday in the Plum [Plumbridge?] fair they took him to Omagh Infirmary last night it was broke about the ankle some people says the foot will have to be taken off You want know [sic] how the people feels since Joe got married well it has not done us any good we all think we are time enough yet I suppose you have heard by this time that we have bought James McKelveys farm we gave him £120 for it so the people tells me that I am for doing something now but they may be mistaken |
