Transcript | Sand Hills near Augusta Decr [December?] 15 1874 W. J. C. Allen Esq Belfast Ireland Dear Sir I have just got settled here about a month ago, and I take up my pen to write, as I can send my letter off in the hope of its reaching you, which could not be done with any certainty where I have been sojourning for these last twelve months. If I remember correctly my last was mailed from 'Macon' some time last February which I hope reached you in due time. I am uneasy about my sister not knowing where a letter would find her and not having heard from her since your last letter - The time is at hand when I shall have to remit to you her usual annuity - and I have not yet recd [received?] one cent of my Uncle's bequest to me - The last I sent thro' Mr Bean was out of my own private funds, and on which I have been living since my Uncle's death. My bequest was in specified money The executors want me to take property at the valuation, as the present time is so much depressed it would sell much below its value. The piece of property amounts to more than my bequest and also that of my sister's added to it, the overplus I would have to pay interest on until the final settlement when it would be taken out of my residuary. The income would enable me to live, and send her her annuity punctually - When this is concluded I will settle my affairs, so that she shall have the income as usual in the event of my death - and which would be still the safest investment for her - In view of all this I therefore request you to do me the favour of drawing out a Document authorizing me to invest her money with mine - and also to state in it and inform her, that she has no claim on it, but an annuity her life time - And have her signature to it and forward to me, - I know you will understand me in this matter, & I draw the writing so that it will prevent any one of presenting any claim as from her after her death. As she is often not in her proper senses such things might be attempted, and as she is mostly among an unprincipled and low class of people, who might expect to be benefited, and who would put her up to any expediency to get money. This, is why, I want her to know that it is only an annuity she has as long as she lives - to prevent her from fraud, or from giving away under inebriate excitement, the only support she can have - So as not to sacrifice the property there is five years allowed to settle up the Estate and if I do not take the property offered to me at the valuation I would have a long time to wait. & probably be no better in the end. I am Guardian for my Brother James' children. Their bequest is in money, and it is not legal for me to take property for them. The small amount they are left will not do more than clothe & pay their schooling. There are seven of them all Boys - and I will have to keep them as best I can. You see I lay before you my emergencies so you can judge what I have to do, and the care devolved on me at my time of life. - but the Lord is a good helper and I trust will sustain me to go through the duties allotted me. To make things still worse the Geo R.Road [Georgia Railroad?] will not declare a dividend this winter, and my Brother's widdow [widow?] has her all invested in it. That will be another call on my income I fear this winter. I have troubled you with a long letter but trust to your friendship & goodness of heart to give it your attention. I trust you and your family have got through the past summer in health and happiness - I am living on the Sand Hill near to Mr Thos [Thomas?] W. Coskery - be kind enough to address your letter for me to his care, as I have no box in town. He told me he had a letter from you lately, and bid me give you his best respects &c. - Be pleased to seal with wax as you have formerly done. Deeply grateful for your past kindness and attention I am with respect Yours truly G. O. Giltenan. |
