April 8th 1821.

Dr [Dear?] Father
I take this Opportunity of writing to you by a
Gentleman that is going to Scotland to let you know that I am
well & Now living with a gentleman of the name of Sossman at
the above place who is married to a Daughter of Bob Miller of
Tenesee [Tennessee?] I was a fourthnight [fortnight?] in the
House before I knew it She tells me her father Broke James's
[James'?] will they appear to be Verry [very?] descent
[decent?] people to me & of course her & I is relations (sic)
I have wrote you Different times but Never got any
letters from you I had the ague but has perfectly Recovered &
is well this long time I Expect to pass the most of this
Summer here it is a high town on the Tomdigby [Tombigbee?]
River about 80 Miles North of Mobile & allowed to be a
healthy place, times Verry [very?] ---- [----?] here at
present & no appearance of better & I hear worse in Ireland I
intend to write to my Uncle in Carlisle to See how they are
but I would Expect a letter as soon from Ireland as from him,
its likely I shall go home in the fall if I am well I would
be glad of a letter from you & when you write direct to the
Care of John Stuart, Mobile, Alabama State, West Florida -
give my love to Ballymony [Ballymoney?] people & All my
Relations & Friends & Neighbours tell Mr. Hugh Glenn that I
suppose I might Wish him a great deal of Happiness I wish my
Uncle Moore was here to have a months Shooting With me the
men here thinks Nothing of Cutting Out the Centres 100 or
two yards Distance & there is no Doughertys here -
I dont Reccomend [recommend?] Any person to Come here unless
he has a good trade I Can Earn as much money as I want but a
good taylor [tailor?] Outstrips me you may tell R. McGown the
Weather is getting tollerable [tolerable?] Hot now - there is
no sickness here Yet I heard by Wm [William?] Stuart that my
Uncle John Was unwell but I trust in Providence he is
Recovered I ---- --thing [have nothing?] to add but that Wm
[William?] Stuart is Well & living Within 8 miles of me John
of Mobile is well also
