Transcript | FROM: Robert Givin, Saint Stephens, State of Alabama, U.S.A. TO: His Father John, [Lisconnan, County Antrim, Ireland?] Saint Stephens Sept 10th 1821 Dear Father I Received your letter a few days ago dated 15th April & am glad to hear of all your good healths I have been living With Mr [Sossaimand?] Since 8th March - I had a letter from my Uncle James & they Are All in good Health he Says you Intend Sending Some Money to me if you send it to him I Can get it it would Enable me to try & do Something On My Way home I Can make money Enough to keep me descent [decent?] here but it is hard to Make a large fortune My Wages is little Only 50 Dol P [Dollars per?] Month but Expect to Rise [----?] soon I pay from 12s [shillings?] to £1 for a pair of Shoes & then [they?] Wont last 6 Weeks - the Sickly Moths [Months?] is past Nearly & Things Will Start My Employer lost his only Child & Sister in Law - We have been Making two Coffins At one time they Cost from 20 to 100 Dols p- [Dollars a piece?] No news but a good Crop of Cotton & Corn I am laying up all I Can to try & Come to Something Independent this Country is [d---s?] in All the States & let the people Stay at home I heard in Spring last Henry Wynne Was Well in Orleans John Stuart is in good Health So is Billy - there is a Man here has Made Money by Marrying A Widdow [Widow?] of the Name of Deal from Novely - My best Respects to All My Acquaintances & I Am your Obedient Son Robert Givin My Friendship to James Gilm--- [Gilmore?] R.G. |
