Transcript | FROM: Robert Givin, New Orleans, Louisiana, U.S.A. TO: His Father, John Givin, Parish of Lisconnan, Co Antrim, Ireland. New Orleans September 4th 1822 Dr [Dear?] Father I Embrace this Opportunity of writing to you that I am well & now in the above place this is pretty large town and a great deal of Buying done in it it has been tolerable healthy this Summer as yet & the Sickly Season is Nearby but I have harly [hardly?] any news to Write, but as you like to hear about I and there is as good on this River (Missisipia) [Mississippi?] as in the world Sugar grows on the land Successively for ages its more than one year since the last letter I Recd [Received?] from you was dated I will Quit writing to you if this is the way I want you to write me manny [many?] particulars & a great deal Oftener it is easy to send them there is a Vessel or two trades here from Belfast Evry [Every?] year or send them to Any part of America I will get them - I dont feel altogether Reconciled to go home at present the fact is money is scarce With [-?] & I wont go home poor. A little start in this Country a man can make money with Economy which puts him from hard work in a warm climate like this but when he has to depend on his weekly wages together with paying high for Boarding Clothing & he can Realize but little I have lost One Hundred & Fifty Dollars by my Employer dying suddenly in Mobile I Recd [Received?] [a-----?] letter from my Uncle [I--?] Since I came to this Country. he Mentioned getting letters from Ben in Coleraine [D--ly?] but he never had Spoken of me in any of them Altho [Although?] I do not Care Altho [Although?] the fact is I would have had something but there is so Manny [many?] Swindlers to cheat Working men in this Country - I wrote two or three letters to you this Summer Which I Expect you Recd [Received?] the yellow Fever is in town but a man must Run chances & the Season is pretty far advanced. Henry Wynne is well and some of his family is grown his Wife Died in Decbr [December?] last. John Stuart & Billy is well in Mobile I Remain your affectionate Son Robt [Robert?] Givin |
