Dear Brother
yours of the 16th Ult[imate?] rec[eive?]d
yesterday, I proceed to reply immediately
thank God, my present (or Past) embar[r?]assment
is over, and my friends safe, few days
a purchaser for my Ottawa property
though I sold cheap in order to sell
at all and gave long Credit, yet it puts
me in shape that I can help myself
the notes that I hold against
the place for security against their
[p?]ayment I recieved [received?] one hundred dollars
[?] [home?] balance due the same amount yearly
for five years at ten per cent [annually?]
[ten?] per cent of what I wanted right away
so one ten per cent will offset
the other two per cent, and I am
relieved and know you will rejoice
with me I am very sorry indeed to hear
of the helpless state of my sisters
I wish often that I was near them
that I might do something to cheer
them in their lonliness [loneliness?] please give
them my kindest love
your statement in regard to Father's
provision for the girls is quite
satisfactory indeed it is just about
as I expected it certainly would have
been very wrong not to have made
such provision for them as the
means was at command to do it
and if I said anything that led
you to suppose I thought you was
not acting honestly and fairly in the
matter I'm sorry for it, suerly [surely?] I did
not intend any such thing
I did not think and think still
that the money might have been better
invested I mentioned to Father
that his money would bring him
10 per cent per annum on a five
year loan first mortgage on
real estate worth double the amount
as security in the world
but Father thought different and
it certainly was his priviledge [privilege?] so to do
I would only say that the item of
four per cent for five years on £400
is considerable, but enough of this
I was quite astonished at your statement
that you had not yet began to save any
thing I will gladly accept the
will for the deed and thank you
all the same
we are all well at present
indeed Lucy has not been so
well for years farm life seems
to agree with her we just took
a sixteen mile horse back ride
the other day 28 [sept?] [September?] 16 anneversary [anniversary?]
of our wedding we had a splendid
time I keep four horses you
know I always liked a good horse
I have two beautys [beauties?] I wish you
were here to enjoy a good thirty mile
ride after them some day it would
do you good Johnny is just return[ed?]
from a thrity two mile drive
brought a ton of coal with him
started at seven home at five
stayed about three hours at the coal [bed?]
waiting his turn that is faster than
I used to drive old Jack or Kennie
to Belfast and back I must stop
for want of room and believe me your affectionate
Brother Andrew Greenlees
your same letter recieved [received?]
also from Jennys children
to mine
