Transcript | W Burgh [Williamsburgh?] 17th Feby 1865 My Dear Hugh I expected to have heard from you [on?] this, when you can make it convient [convenient?]. I will be glad to receive a letter - I wrote by Mr [Kirwan?] his stay was so short in N.Y.[New York?] I did not see much of him - his son will be coming out here shortly - every thing is so dear in the way of clothing [in?] N.Y.[New York?] I would feel oblidged [obliged?] by you sending by him or a friend of Mr Ks who is over on business a suit of Black Cloth [?] skin pants. I would wait for the Coat [& vest?] the best you have I enclose the Measare [Measure?] which I hope you [Cutter?] will understand [?] [frock Coat with good farmers satin (no silk) please write to Mr K, on receipt [I have been?] at home all the [winter?] but expect to [leave?] on business next month it may be that I will pay William a visit during the summer We are expecting letters every day from him Edw [Edward?] is still in the front the hard tack has drove off the dispepsia [dyspepsia?] - the success attending the U.S. army for some months past will hope bring round a speedy termination of the War - the visit of the so called peace Comrs [Commissioners?] produced no other result than leading them to understand there could be no peace but by returning to the Union and they would be well received - A meeting of [georgians?] was held last evening in N.Y. [New York?] they [went?] [strongly?] for Union - I will send you a paper tomorrow which will let you see more fully the situation of affairs North & South - The sufferings & devastation those misguided Men have bought on the South is beyond conception and the way they treated our soldiers was unheard of in the most savage nations since the Creation - the man who acted as pirate on Lake [Erie?] is to be executed tomorrow - the results of the War in [developing?] the resources of the North and advancing it in manufactures of all kinds will put the country forward 50 years further than it would have been had the War not taken place - here we have a considerable debt to meet at some distant day but if we are only allowed to keep it among ourselves it will be like the debt of England never felt but european capatalists [capitalists?] is absorbing it very fast just now - Trade has been very dull in N.Y.[New York?] since Nov [November?] owing to the uncertainty of prices Gold has fallen to 203.2 from 289 this affects the price of all kinds of goods both foreign and domestic and the consequence is no one wishes to buy - The speculation in Oil & Oil lands is at a fever height many large fortunes have been made but more will lose in the end David McCallister a friend of the Neillys in his old age has been paid $30-000 for a piece of Land he purchased years ago, though to be worthless - I believe I wrote to you I had a kid [goat?] consigned to me from Boston it occupies very little of my time about four hours a day and pays me handsomely - Margts [Margarets?] business is still very good and steadily increasing - I had a letter from Charlotte last month Anna & Letitia are well - Maria as usual - with kind love to all your family. I remain Affetly [affectiontely?] yours John Hamilton ______*______ Since writing this the agent of the house occupied by my daughter has called to say that owing to the death of the Landlord the property is for sale at a low price. I do wish you would take measures to turn their property into cash so that they might use it to advantage [in?] securing a home to themselves suppose you are called away who is to attend to it [besides?] it will bring [an?] American [Cy?] double of what it will some time to come and strange to say Property can be bought as cheap as formerly when one dollar was as good as another. |
