Transcript | Front of envelope Mr John James Smyth Castledamph, Plumbridge, Co, Tyrone, Ireland POSTAGE STAMP LIVERPOOL 00 [---?] 21 [MY?] 98 [NDI?] Back of envelope Hand written Arrived April 2nd 98 Stamped NEWTOWNSTEWART AM 10 AP 1 [98?] [Page 1] March 31 1898 51 Bute St [Street] Euston Liverpool Eng [England?] Dear Uncle I now take the pleasure of writing to you a few lines hoping all our friends are well as we are all well at present. Dear uncle my father went up to that shop on Saturday and he said by what he can hear it is a man well used to the business for packing and serving and weighing off as he must be well used to it my father said are you sure of it being 30£ a year as he thinks their [there?] must be some mistake in it as it would stand him 16/- a week as well as his board that more than he would get as they reckon 16/- a week as well as his board that (sic) more than he would get as they reckon 16/- a week for board and bed so my father said see first if it is a frost as there would be a soft [trick?] to come [over?] and then [Page 2] to be losing time. Dear Uncle my father said he would have wrote only he has a bad finger and he has said to see further into it as there is a mistake some where. Dear uncle we have had two letters lately from Tommy and he said he is going to send us a photo of the Indian dress on horse back so I dare say you will be getting one as well. Dear Uncle it is not a big firm I dont think they have more than one or two shops and they are not big Dear uncle I have not much to say this time so make more inquiries and make sure of the money [Page 3] No more at Present from Lizzie Hay to uncle John James Smyth write soon and let us know how you got on with it [Small additional note with musical notes included] You notice the notes on the lines Above the staff are A.C.E.G. on lines below the staff are c.a.F.D. Note on spaces above the staff are G.B.D.F.A. on spaces below the staff are D.B.G.E. It is not very often for a flute that you find note (sic) in lower than C below the staff. But if you had any other instrument e.g. violin they are imperative so it is a good thing to know them Observe the following in teaching the scale. I always have trouble in naming the notes below the lines which was due to carelessness in teaching the same. Transcribed by Tony Flanagan |
