Smyth Essex Essex C0 Ontario Canada [Back of Envelope] [Stamped] Essex AP 4 98 ONT [Page 1] Tialhot India Dear Cousin just a few lines to you hoping to find you enjoying the best of health in your part of the world and enjoyed a hearty Christmas and New Year. Dear Cousin I suppose you will think it funny at me talking about xmas now and so far past. Dear James I wrote a few lines to you when I first landed at our destination but I cannot say as to whether you received them or not I came to the conclusion that you must have [Page 2] taken ill but I hope it is not the case. Dear Cousin I write home to My Dear Aunt every other week to let them know how I am keeping and Cousin Bella always asks if I have hear [heard?] from you but I never can say yes the last two letters I had from Bella she said William was very bad and Uncle James had a sore ear but I suppose they will be getting on a bit better by now at least I hope to hear they are the next letter. Dear Cousin I suppose you are getting quite a Canadian now I suppose you will be taking another holiday [Page 3] back to good old Ireland again I stopped three weeks there out my last furlough I wish I could only get there for three weeks out of every year I would be satisfied. Dear Cousin I like being in India alright it is a lot better soldiering here than at home I have joined the army temperance association since I came here. I am looking to when I leave the army to have a few pounds in my pocket if I have the pleasure to leave it there is every chance to save a bit of money here the [there] is [sic] not places here like at home to go and enjoy you self the same as at home the there?] is only [Page 4] the canteen to spent [spend?] your money in beer. Dear Cousin I will send your a [sic] Photo on I have had some taken so if you have one of yourself spare I would very much like it. Dear Cousin I have not much to say to you this time and if these few lines reaches you I hope to hear from you soon is it the write [right?] address I am writing to Ireland the same time so I will tell Aunt I have wrote [written?] to you hoping to find you enjoying every pleasure you can as I am in good health and strength thank God.
