[Page 1] 5/9/97 Cavalry Depot Canterbury Kent Dear Bella excuse me not writing to you and my Aunt and Uncle and Cousins before now as I have been broken hearted I could not have held the pen to tell you how we arrived as I [Page 2] felt more upset about leaving you all than anyone at Liverpool I am nearly broken up I have not much time to write you much before we leave here we leave here on Thursday week the 17th for India we might be there eight years and may be only four but they are transfering [transferring?]some of us to the fourth Hussars they only left here last year so if they do it will be eight years [Page 3] before I get home but if they keep me in the eleventh I will only be away four at the most which I hope they do Dear Aunt we had a good night night [sic] coming from Ireland but I would have rather stayed over there and I hope all the rain as [has?] stopped as we have heavy rain here all the farmers are grumbling the farmers are grumbling [sic] [Page 4] about a bad harvest and very poor potatoe [potato?] crop so they are as bad a [as?] you are Dear Bella I have the letter ready for James before I go away from here so I think I have said all this time I can not really write so you must excuse me I will conclude by bidding you all good Bye I remain your loving Cousin T [Thomas?] Hay to Bella xxxxxx and all the same God be with us till we meet again [Page 1 in top left hand corner] excuse the blots it is old paper stores are shut for a week God Bless you all God Bless you all Dear Bella Transcribed by Mark Gallaher |
