| Transcript | Elmira [?] County of N [New?] York Dear Thomas 28th October 1843 your letter I recd [received?] of the 8th of Augt [carrying?] a draft on [?] [?] [?] for £1 [?] 10 which was regulary paid it was an agreeable surprize to me not expecting any more funds from [Ha---ingtens?] Estate with respect to my late Brother this money, I might say it will [not?] do to let his widdow [widow?] who is married again [let?] have [any part?] of the money that the child & [?] [?] She had when my brother died I should have. She cant [cannot?] claim it by law, all she can claim when there was no will is the one half of all he [?] possessed off [of?] this [expectancy?] & I have not heard whither [whether?] the child is still liveing [living?] or not, my late Brother John got the loan of £5 from me in L. Derry [Londonderry?] & was to have paid me when we arrived in Quebec but when I applied to him for it he said he would pay me but as I left him in Quebec at that time I never had an opportunity of getting it from him so I am as well [entitled?] to be paid that Sum as the widdows [widow's?] husband to receive it & as much in want of it, therefore I will not consent to more than the one half which she would be entitled to to be paid to the widdow [widow?], with this exception all the expenses you have been out deducted out of it & the £5 that is comeng [coming?] to me deducting also every expense that you will be out so that you will have to remit me the £5 out of her part free of all expense as my brother John intended to pay me if he had lived & I have no right to be at any expense in receiving my [own?]. I would not say anything about it if it was not going into the hands of them that is in my brothers place, to rid you off [of?] all trouble in future, (as you have had to [too?] much owing to your bad state of health) remit [her?] part [deducting?] what I have before mentioned & the childs half without any deduction except your expense & the expenses I will be at, you will have to remit to me & I will [put?] it to [Interest?] here for the childs use as the child will look to me when she comes of age for her part, I will [risk?] any trouble at litigation, should there be any and you will be done with all [trouble?]. I would wish [consistent?] with your state of health how soon you could accomplish all I have mentioned, you can write her when you send her part what I said & will do concerning the childs part and the £5 you deducted as a debt [?] by my late brother John to me & that [you dont?] want to have any more trouble or be put to any more expense about it not haveing [having?] funds in your hands to meet any more expenses & that she will have to look to me in future [relative?] to the childs part, but [into?] her hands or Husbands I dont intend it ever shall go I have the best right to take care of it for the childs use, a letter of credit simeler [similar?] to what [you?] [?] last with this exception to be [paid?] to my order, not haveing [having?] to identify myself will answer every purpose, you have nothing to fear in doing what I have told you in this letter. I hold the acct [account?] as I know you have it down in your book & a short statement will do now & you will have done with all trouble you have had to [too?] much, all I can say when I can be off [of?] any use to you during my life time & [yours?] [concerning me?] at any time & will feel happy at any time to serve you as you have done to me I told you before you are the onely [only?] person I could place confedance [confidence?] in to do my business in an upright manner.
