Transcript | Letter from George and Catherine Hunt Addresssed to John Gallagher, Branch Hill Post Office, Clearmont Co., Ohio. Dec the 3 1848 [3 December 1848?] Chesterfield Essexe County [Massachusetts?] Dear Brother and Sisters We received your letter of Oct the 23 and little as it contained were very glad to receive it. We are all well and God grant that these few lines will find you enjoying the same blessing. We have nothing in particular to write only I have been to see John Kelly since we got your letter but it was no use going for I got nothing from him but a promnise to send the money in two weeks time but he has not sent it. I have been to Plattsburg with the due bill and received the pay in goods. I have not wrote home since you left me nor don't intend to until I hear from you again. But I want you to write to my Father and give him the directions to write to me. I want you to write to me what route Nancy and the rest of them will have to come whether they will come by New York for I should like to meet them before they go to you that I may be in company with them. Write to us how much money it will take to bear our expenses to where you are and what will be our route. John Goff says tell John that he sends his best respects to him and say he has not forgotten (sic) you if you have him and hopes in his next letter he will not forget to give him a description of the country as he promised. Catherine says tell brother Thomas not to spend all the money he has on the rest of them but save enough to buy her a nice rocking chair for it will be too far to carry the one she had when you left here and she is going to leave it in a present to Mrs Goff. By the way, Mrs. Goff sends her best respects to John and Hannah and hopes they will not be so taken up with new acquaintances as to forget old ones all together. I am getting along very well now with my chopping, there is no snow. As yet little Ann is well and grows a little now but she had a sore gathering in her ear but she is well of it now. We make a comfortable living here. We want for nothing now only to see you. Write as soon as you receive this. We have nothing more to write so we close by Subscribing ourselves your affectionate brother and sister. This is to you all, From George and Catharine [Catherine?]Hunt to John Thomas and Hannah Gallagher Notes: George Hunt at the time of this letter made his living cutting firewood. Catherine Gallagher Hunt, born 1812 in Meenbane, Co. Donegal, died 1895 in Indiana, had three children : Ann, married Hillary Ash - no children. Joseph. Hannah. John Gallagher, died 14 Nov 1893, age 80, came to America about 1847, but returned to Ireland later. The letter anticipates the emigration of Nancy Gallagher, Manuseh (Manus) Gallagher, and John Gery from March 13 to May 7, 1849. Thomas is apparently financing their move.
