TranscriptDear Madam,
As the time approaches for
the sale of your land, & as I shall not return to Georgetown
before Friday, it is necessary that the papers should in
the mean time be prepared for execution on Monday
You will therefore be pleased to employ some Gentleman
of the Bar to engage in the business immediately
I am recommended that Mr Grant, as [?] [?] Mr Rothmahlin
- For his direction, I enclose the agreement a copy
of which Mr Alston has signed, & Mr Gordon's letter directing
further, the mode of drawing them, all of which you will
put, together with this letter into the hands of Mr Grant
The agreement, you will receive, binds Mr Alston to
associate with him, his partner, in the [?], or to give in addition
to the mortgage of the Plantation purchased, a mortgage
of other land - Mr Alston has offered his upper plantation
to be joined in the mortgage of Ball[?], & you will
be good enough to apply to him for a description of it for
Mr Grants information, - perhaps however Mr Alston
may already have supplied Mr Rothmahlin with a description
[?] you had better therefore make the [?]ssing
[?] if you would prefer that their application to
Mr Alston should proceed from me, you can send to him
the enclosed letter, after you have read and sealed it - you
will discover that the first bond is to be [?] after 1st March
1805, & [?] for the payment of #1000 Sterling, with
interest from the day when you [?] the possession
of the place - the second bond for #1500 (with interest from
the date, but payable annually) 1st March 1806 - & the
third for #1500 payable 1st March 1807, the date as above
the inst. [interest?] annually - The note is already prepared
Mr Rothmahlin has changed his opinion with the necessity
of selling the negroes, & I have suggested him to direct
the sheriff to strike out of his advertisment
as related to the negroes - If that has not been already done
be pleased to call upon him & the Sheriff requesting it.
I hope we shall soon close this disagreeable
mess, I am with respect Madam,
