Transcript | Wilkins' p.o. March 24./66 Dear Mary As Ellen & Doll are the Martha's of your house, you must be the Mary & Secretary. I waited a week to know Robert's fate, but Mr White & Harbaugh being absent, we know not whether he will be restored, & your not coming may have an unfavorable result in the Board. They were highly pleased with their visit & delighted with the situation [-?] the Farm, & they say like the Candidate who could not be elected for want of votes, you cannot be at home till you have society & Voters around You I wrote a long letter to day to David, addressed as much to the Ladies as to him, knowing that he visits them frequently. I informed him that Mother & I expected to be in St Louis about the middle of next month. Fan & family are well but, as usual, - no girl. it renders it very unpleasant for us that she cannot keep help. wages still advancing & services less efficient. Our neighbor Bard & old Mrs McFarland agree so badly that he is obliged to remove. He goes to Sandusky St on first of April, next, he rents there Furniture of Saint Charles' Hotel all selling off, & Mr Sherles returning to it, Mr Liggett went in yesterday & bought a quantity of beds & bedding. Fan rises by day light and prepares breakfast. I am just asking myself if I am likely to possess vigor sufficient to preside at your Blackboard with a, large Class, composed of Yourself Budd & Miss Carie, in Algebra & Elementary Geometry. I opine I would have you fit to solve simple Equations in two months by devoting two hours daily to this study. It may be encouraging for you to know, that the great Philosopher Plato was asked what he thought they were all doing in Heaven," replied every one of them reading Geometry." but I must wait, first to arrive in Me. [Maine?] before I plan building houses. Present our love to all & as Carie says she cant love every body. I can't write every body's name John Kelly more soon. |
