Transcript | Turtle Creek Dec 9 1873 Dear Brother we received yours of the 8th Nov [November?] was glad to hear from you been well and we are all well at present but i am sorry to say since we last wrote to you times as took a great change pretty near all the operators in business is broake [broke?] up you will have herd [heard?] of this money panic. I will tell you this country is in a very bad state at present i would not be afread [afraid?] to say just around Pittsburgh that they is 20000 men out of work and all over the country is the same and it will be worse if things does not take a change before long it might end in Rebellian [Rebellion?] some dont care how soon we have not done any Work for two months and we do not know when we shall work any this Country has been growing fast since the war building railroads and trying to make every city into a Paris and now the fall as come all at once but for my part i wish they would square things up soon and commence on some sound bases once more i believe be what we understand in your letter that you injoy [enjoy?] yourself in a soldiers life we are glad to hear it we would think you would gladly have excepted the offer to have gone recruiting we would think you would have more liberty and leashure [leisure?] and see more fun but you say you dont care to except it but you should know The best we hope you gave them our respects but i would not know one half of them now and peoples ways Changes as they grow older but you say in your letter that you did not say any thing to any one only Thomas Henry about us that is all right i think he acted right mean in not answering your letter but it is as you said with some people out of sight out of mind for i wrote to Esabala [Isabella?] and got not answer and i wrote to William to New York and could not hear anything but weather they received my letter i know not but it does not make much difference as we are all growing older but i am glad to think i have one Brother that i can Correspond as i felt lost since my Mother died and i hope this Country will get over this money panic and peace and happyness [happiness?] will reighn [reign?] when my sister Mary came to this Country i thought i would be happy but Mother and her could not agree she was one of the boldest girls i ever saw and one house would not hold them both and they was great disturbance so Mary went to live out and i have not heard from her this long time i have heard but not saw her she is in Pittsburgh she might have been at home with me if she had been more [seady?] steady So we will Close for this time hoping to here from you soon again so good night from your ever true Sister and Brother James & Jane McCague Turtle Creek Allegheny County PA James McCague Turtle Creek Allegheny America |
