Transcript | Antrim, April, 9th, 1857. My dear Jane I received a letter from Bella some months ago marked A. This was according to my directions as the only acknowledgement I wished to have for the money I sent to you to her and to Sarah McKeen. I had a letter from Sarah but without the mark A. This may have been an omission that should not have taken place, as it leaves me uncertain whether she received her share or not. But you have not written me a line of acknowledgement. I am not afraid of the money having gone astray seeing Bella got her share but still it would be much more satisfactory to have a letter from yourself marked A as I directed. Your Uncle John McConnell died on the 6th of November last. He left your aunt in full power during her life. She and Mrs. Wm. McElrath of Millfarm drove in a covered car to Moira - took the train there for Dublin, administered the will of their deceased husbands, returned to Moira, took their car and returned home the same night. Samuel Rea had been killing a pig for Mr. Jno. [John?] Crawford when going home his foot slipped crossing a ditch, the back of his head came against a stone, which fractured his skull and killed him. Thus suddenly and unexpectedly does death come and warns us -- "Be ye also ready for in such an hour as ye know not, the Son of Man cometh". Thomas Hunter, John McConnell and their families are all well. William, Langford and their families are in their usual good health. Anne and Betty are well. Your mother and I have reason to be very thankful to the Most High for the health and strength we continue to enjoy. Years make changes but on us they have not been so rapid as with many others. I would be glad to know very particularly about Alexander. Does he remember his grandmother and me? Does he talk anything about us? How is he forward in his education? Has he good health? Let me know how Mary is also. I wish to hear everything about them and your other children therefore tell me all and be sure to write immediately. Provisions here are at the following prices - Pork 60/ per cwt. Butter 1/- to 1/2 a lb. Wheat 12/- to 12/10 - potatoes 2/6 to 4/- Write everything respecting your own situation and the situation of Wm. McKeen, his family and Bella and her family. Your mother and I are anxious to hear every particular about you everyone. Give our kind love to them all to your husband, to Alexander, Mary and your younger children and now praying the blessing of God upon yourself, your husband your children and the other families I remain Your ever affectionate father Arthur McConnell My very kind love to Mrs. Nettleton Alexander, Mary and your family.
