Transcript | Dear [torn] I now embrace this present opportunity of writing [torn] to let you know the particulars of this country [torn] has been a great alteration in times since we wrote [torn] letter you requested us to ley you know how [lana?] [torn] but father has mentioned nothing for that in [torn] of the letter but improved land can be bought in our neighbourhood from ten to twenty dollars per acre and as to the wages [torn] can be constant employ wages for is from 10 to 15 dollars per month and for young women from four to six per month but money is very scarce produce of all kinds is at a reasonable price but the prospect of grain crops this year is very discouraging indeed therefore i would not like to encourage you at present for i think thee will be an alteration for the better before many years for the old settlers in this country say that times is almost as hard as ever they were but it see you are anxious to leave the old country but there has been some landed in this country within twelve months that wish the were back again but if you have plenty of gold and silver there will be a good chance for living here and as is respects bringing necessaries with you if you come bring nothing with you that you can do without on the way for there is a heavy freight on goods on the water and so you do start put all your goods into barrels for it is the sofest [softest?] and best way to carry them i will just mention the prices of cloths here broad cloth from 4 to 15 dollars per yard and the making of a coat here will cost from 5 to 7 dollars therefore if you should come to this country [I?] would advise you to bring such with you for we hear they are much cheaper there than here and if you set out start for New York and from that to philadelphia by water and from that to pittsburgh and to Newcastle that is within eighteen miles of us all by water 8 will add no more at present but remains your affectionate Cousin Alex.
