Transcript | 336 West 23rd Street New York June 29th, 1872. My Dear Sir, After an almost "unpardonable" silence (which I hope you will excuse) I embrace this opportunity of writing. Three times have I tried to fulfill [fulfil?] my engagements by sending our Mary's "Likeness" and each time we got disapointed [disappointed?] by her being taken suddenly Ill. This week I have been successful as you will see on the arrival of this. I told Rachel we would go and have a picture taken last week and so we went out and got disapointed [disappointed?] as we could get no artist to take a likeness in the afternoon as we had to come home quite discouraged. Next day baby was taken sick and had two "spasms" (or Fits) which are very fatal to children in this city and next day I took her and got the inclosed [enclosed?] taken which is not a perfect picture by any means. We have a true picture which cannot be sent by mail it is taken on porcelian [porcelain?] and is as natural as life, and if some of our old neighbours had let us know that they were returning home we could have sent you a true likeness, but hoping that our circumstances in a little time will allow us to make the tour of Europe we may all yet appear in our proper person. All are now well hoping this may reach you and family in the best of health as this leaves us at this present time we remain as ever your affectionate Brother and Sister John and Rachel McCullough 31 North Moon St. [Street?] N. [New?] York N. Y. [New York?] P.S. [post script?] We are living at 336 West 23rd St. [Street?] for the summer months as Rachel's old Mrs. [Mr. Miss?] Boyd is now in Europe traveling [travelling?] for the summer and we have the care of their house untill [until?] September J.M [John McCullough?] |
