Transcript | Ballycastle Union May 21 Mr Relief Commissioner Gentlemen I was only waiting for your answer to my first application for more than the usual allowance in the case of subscriptions, to the island of Rathlin, hoping that yr [your?] answer wd [would?] be favourable, before I wd [would?] forward to your letter I recd [received?] some time back from the Relief Committee of that district thro' [through?] their Chairman Revd [Reverend?] Mr Gage As, [?] yr [your?] answer recd [received?] this day, holds out no such hope, I now beg to enclose you the letter in [question?] and shall merely remark that the case is a very severe one, & such as I consider would justify if it could be done the breaking thro' [through?] of a rule which in [most?] instances may be very [correct?] & necessary, but in this of an island so peculiarly circumstanced & with so many disadvantages to struggle agst [against?] as Rathlin, is not at all suitable & I would even say almost unjust There is not one of the divisions, with the exeception [exception?] of the Glens, anything like so [poor?] or requiring more assistance than this, and yet only the same amt [amount?] of relief is extended to it as to others that have many more local advantages & the benefit of many residents [resident?] gentry to assist & carry them thro [through?] their dreadful crisis. #PAGE 2 You will see by the enclosed that the Committee [require?] 1st a sum, at the very least double the amt [amount?] subscribed. 2nd Not to be called on to assist for any sums of money except such as may be specially placed at their disposal as a Relief Committee 3rd The option of using their own [discretion?] as to giving rations daily or less frequently, as they may see Last & 4th that the clerk should not be compelled to accompany the books over when sending in their fortnight statements. To the 1st you alone have the power to concede, if it can be done at all, last to the 2nd, 3rd, & 4th I took on myself to say that circumstances as that E Duncan peculiarly [?] they might use their own discretion as to how often it wd [would?] be [?] to give out relief in the week, as also as to the necessity of sending over the clerk, and as to [anointing?] for any monies except those placed in their hands as a Relief Committee, it never occured [occurred?] to the Commissrs. [Commissioners?] to make so unreasonable demands. Will you be so good as to let me know, what further steps I am to take I have the honour to be Yr [your?] obt [obedient?] servant B [Bernard?] McManus Inspecting Officer |
