Transcript | My dear Sir, I have been for some time [past?] expecting a final answer from the Rathlin Committee as to what resolution they have come to on tne subject of continuing or not under the Relief Act - You promised when I last had the pleasure of seeing you that you wd [would?] communicate their determination as to whether they wd [would?] resign or not, the first moment you could - I gave you the answer of the Commissrs [Commissioners?] to the effect that the Treasury will not allow in any case more than an equivalent grant to be given in the case of subscriptions, so that really they had not the power to comply with yr [your?] request of a grant for double the amt [amount?] They however were & are willing to give as grant equal to any amt [amount?] of subscription raised - & they have complied, as I before mentd [mentioned?] to you, with all yr [your?] other considerations, in past they did all in their power to meet any objection raised on the part of the committee I have now however the pleasure to communicate to you intelligence that plows the question of resignation completely aside & does away with all necessity for it - As the Commissrs [Commissioners?] have not the power of granting more than an equivalent sum of money, they, in consideration of the peculiar circumstances of the island #PAGE 2 have ordered the Commissary General to give #40 worth of provisions out of the funds placed in his hands by the British Association, which will suit our purposes equally as well - So that should you continue under the Relief Act, you will get from Govt [Government?] 1st this grant of #40 of provisions & 2ndly an equivalent sum in cash to the amt [amount?] of yr [your?] subscriptions The latter I find, at 1/0 in the pound, on the poor law valuation will amt [amount?] to #48..17..3.. & I believe there are #10 or 15# more subscribed by other parties making an equivalent from Govt [Government?] of 58# to 63# more in all #98 to #103 from Govt [Government?] in addition to [1/0?] local subscriptn [Subscription?] So that really I think you are getting as much from them as you could reasonably expect under any circumstances When will you be over again I wd [would?] like to see you to speak over this matter as well as relative to the change we propose to make in the day of meeting for the Famine Committee - The latter we think of making Monday in place of Saturday,- Hoping all with you is quite well Believe me Revd [Reverend?] dear Sir in [?] [?] Yours sincerely Bernd [Bernard?] McManus June 9th |
