Transcript | New Orleans 8th of Feburary 1849 Dear Wife I send these few lines to let you know of our safe arrival here after a long passage of 64 Days but thank God we are all Well, and I hope you and the children are all well at Home. We arrived here on Monday Evening & got into a berth to discharge the same Evening, & commenced on tuesday to put out the salt. I expect to morrow [tomorrow?] to have all out, so we will not be long here, so we are going to take all Corn, the post closes to morrow [tomorrow?], so you will have this by the first packet, and if all goes well we will not be long after it. the first night we got here the most of the crew run away, and along with them David & Bradley, which I am sorry to say, I think two very bad boys, they got into the hands of these man catchers [?] and made them crazy, and got their Cloathes [Clothes?] away before I or the Capt [Captain?] knew they had any intention of running. they have left without any cause for no one ever touched either of them or gave them any Occasion to run from the ship. Dear wife tell Mr O'Donnell I have seen Thomas and Andy O'Donnell is here also & desired me to let his mother know he is well. I have seen Mr Mundell but have not been to see Mrs M [Mundell?] yet the Fever & Cholera has been very rife here but not many cases at present, the ship Superior arrived the day before us & will be sailing from here about the same time that we expect to sail in 8 or 9 days. Remember me to all our friends & give my love to the Children and believe me Dear Wife your Loving Husband Wm [William?] Mitchell |
