Transcript | New Orleans December 5th 1849 My Dear Joseph, Above you have copy of a letter received from John on Monday last in answer to mine of the 6th Octr [October?] last through you. To my mind he shows more affection and depth of feeling than I gave him credit for. I am sure Father and all would much rather have me at home than here but I do not exactly like to throw away two years spent in this country besides throwing away the advantage of acclimatization. I have not any intention of going sooner than summer if I go at all. Which will greatly depend on arrangements here now pending. One thing I am afraid of and that is if ever matters should take a turn in anyway distasteful to me I would turn my eyes again to U.S.A. Portadown I am sure I could not endure long and then Belfast, Liverpool or London would be my ground. Still home presents a great many strong attractions but the people in P/Down [Portadown?] I do not like and sooner or later I would be at loggerheads with some of them or I am mistaken. You have now my letter and the answer and I would like to know your opinion fairly, fully, & freely on the question at issue. Mary Stanley has got married to a Mr Waugh of Dublin Lizzy's letter says he is a brother of Ellen Waugh's but that does not enlighten me in the least sure at any rate to be a Methodist Preacher's son and is to reside in Derryhale. Poor Chapman May his ashes rest in peace where no sound is heard save the tramp of wild buffalo or the shout of the hunter Jas [James?] Kernaghan has become an Independant Minister health the answer plea Love the supposed cause Don't know who they have in PDown [Portadown?] this year as M P's [Methodist Preachers?] Nothing new here Explosions are common two have occurred since the "Louisiana" one of a locomotive engine Sunday night last 2 lives lost I Remain My Dear Joseph Your affect [affectionate?] Cousin William Montgomery |
