Transcript | Cincinnati November 23 1847 My dear Joe Yesterday morning I arrived here after a most fatiguing journey I got to Baltimore on Tuesday morning after I left you and left there at 1/4 past 7 on my way to Cumberland at which place we should have arrived about 6 pm but owing to a coal train having broken down on the way we did not get there till 11 O'Clock pm and then started to cross the mountains. This was the worst part of the journey as we were 23 hours crossing. 9 of us being cooped up like jail birds in a stage about the size of a Philad- [Philadelphia?] carriage I arrived in Pittsburg on Thursday evg [evening?] and left on Saturday so that I spent Sunday on the river ohio. This city is as they say in this country "quite a place" there being upwards of 100000 inhabitants in it. I will send you the map of it when I can find a good one. Chapman & Mercer have two joint concerns - Vinegar C & [Mr?] Bakery - [M----?] The latter is an excellent paying business here but is [affesntend [affected?] wish [with?] Sunday working. There is very little observance of that day here. With love to Mr Massey & Rachel & Uncle Your affect [affectionate?] cousin W Montgomery. |
