Transcript | Guerneville Jany [January?] 27th 1880 Dear Brother I received both your letters in due time with the certificate of baptism. And was pleased to hear that you had got things arranged and settled at Larrycormick. but am sorry to see that your unhappy disposition still has the upper hand of you You never will be content unless you try and master that disposition you say you wish you had gone to Australia too when you came to Larrycormick in 1869 you said the same thing and when you spoke of it in your letters last spring I encouraged the idea but in your next you said you had concluded to remain on in Ireland and let your children emigrate if nec--ary [necessary?] Now you [surely?] had long enough to make up your mind what you [?] is more decision & character I know very well times are bad in Ireland just now but they will not remain so to very long I hope I will do what I said but [faded] [do?] it [faded] I have an opportunity of going to San Francisco which will be a few weeks or perhaps a couple of months yet but I will keep my promise good unless some calamity should overtake me in the meantime. I [wont?] say how much it will be until you get it I hope you succeeded in getting that money from the bank to help you out until you hear from me again. Try and make yourself content and if you find out that the folks all like Australia and that you are still dissatisfied with Ireland then go out too. I expect to go some time [sometime?] this year myself. Hoping you are all well Your affct [affectionate?] brother R. [Robert?] J. Alexander |
