Transcript | Portaferry, Co. Down. Decr [December?] 13th [1850?] Lieut [Lieutenant?] Colonel J.V. Nugent presents his compliments to Marcus Ward & encloses a legend about the Savage family which may be interesting enough to insert in the Savage memoirs. Legend of the Old Castle at Portaferry. Years ago in the olden time, when "Port-on-ferry" was a small fishing village, two young men having distinguished themselves at the English Court were rewarded by the gift of "the [----?]": the Castle to be possessed by the one who should first light a fire in it. Both arrived in Strangford at the same time, and stood together on the shore looking across at the Castle each considering how to reach it before the other. One did not long hesitate, but while the other waited for the boat, Savage plunged into the [----?] reaching the Castle safely and so gaining the prize. The one who swam across whose name was Savage is the ancestor of the present family. |
