Dear Friend Mary
As I promised am writing to
you before I return home from
my vacation
I expect to leave Woodslee
on this Eve. [evening’s?] train and as
it is now just 11 a.m. my
time is getting very short.
I have had a very pleasant
visit am sorry it is about
ended would liked (sic) to have
stayed another week. but
work at our Office is needing
my attention. so by this
time to-morrow [tomorrow?] I will be
busily charging up a/c [accounts?] and
getting my neglected work
in order. I will have plenty

[Page 2]
to do for awhile [a while?] I expect
and then our fall business
will be started.
To-day Pa, Ma, and my two
brothers Clarence and Charlie
are out visiting Mrs. Jones.
They came out on yesterday
mornings [morning’s?] train and will return
this Eve. [evening?] so we will
likely meet at Essex
I intended going home this
morning as Willie was going
up to see Belle Isle Park today,
but found out my brothers
were away, so will go this
eve. [evening?] and then he will have a
longer day to-morrow [tomorrow?]. He
is now in the cellar churning
and whistling happily.
Who do you think is here?
Joe Duncan came up in the boat

[Page 3]
from Cleveland to Detroit
leaving Sat. Eve. [evening?] arriving in
Det. [Detroit?] early yesterday morning
taking train for Essex. hunted
up Jim's boarding place and
roused him out of bed.
They went to Church and
had Dinner to-gether [together?]. then
Joe struck out for here. walking
from Essex. arriving here
about 3 p.m. It gave us
all a great surprise for we
did not see him come in
the front door. and we were
all in the dining room when
he walked in. Cassie. Fred
and the Children were here too.
We went to Church in the
Eve. [evening?] and then Miss.
[Jair?] and brother came up and we
had some Music and Singing

[Page 4]
Mr. Duncan has a good
voice and then with. Miss.
[Jair?]. Rob. [Robert?] Mr. Smyth
and myself we made quite a
noise. Belle playing the part
of the audience.
Belle then brought in a
large plate of Plums and
Pears. which were lovely
and went good after the singing.
Rob has been down several
times. since you left. On
the Eve of the Picnic to Bois
Blanc. he stayed up til [till?] Mr.
Smyth came home which must
have been close on to eleven
They had a heavy storm
while up there. also here
Belle got drenched to the skin
getting in the little Chicks in

[Page 5]
the Brooder the [they?] also was (sic) up
Friday Eve. [evening?] but I was up at
Cassies. [Cassie’s?]
Well Mary. how are you and
what are you doing. we have
often thought and spoken of
you. wondering how you were
enjoying your trip. did you
have it rough or cold or was
it calm. We are all anxious
to know. Did you meet in
with any nice friendly people
on board Ship. I think it so
nice if one does. I suppose
you were busy yesterday
meeting all your friends again.
did you go to Church?
Oh. by the way Belle says
to tell you Miss. Webster
has sent in her resignation
They will miss her greatly here.
I did not get acquainted with

[Page 6]
her while here.
Annie and Children have
gone back to St Thomas, while
in Leamington Annie was
taken very sick. had to have
the Dr. [Doctor?] but she is getting better
now only a little weak. Think
she had Cholera [Morbus?],
which is very weakening.
Oh yes. about those Photos. I
have seen the Proof (sic) and they
are very good for a group. expect
to get yours and mine
to-day [today?] on way to train. if
I do I will post yours from Windsor.
They were not done on Sat.
when I was down after my
mail. Well Mary. it is about
Dinner time. so will close
I hope you are enjoying good health.
Will be glad to hear from you
at any time. From your loving friend

Gertrude E. Paddon
