Transcript | Quebec, June 2d, 1838 My dearest Parents, I cannot allow the second of June the Anniversary of my birth to pass without writing to express to you my love and gratitude. It is melancholy to think that I am far removed from you on this day. I know that you will recollect me & feel assured that my thoughts and affections are all yours. When shall we meet again? News is just arrived that the Americans have taken and burnt a steam vessel belonging to the English called after our dear relative Sir Robert Peel. It was a fine vessel worthy of the distinguished name it bore. She was carrying specie to the amount of five thousand pounds from one station to the other. This they stole, the passengers they stripped of their clothes & turned them naked into the woods. One lady on board who had just been confined asked to retain a blanket for herself and baby and she was answered by the thrust of a bayonet which entered her back and wounded her severely. Everyone thinks that the Grenadier Guards will be moved up the country to protect the Border. I wish we may see little active service, but do not be alarmed, dearest Mamma, I shall run no unnecessary risks, though I hope I shall always be one of the first to do my duty. God bless you all - ever, but particularly on this day. From your most attached & devoted Son, Robert Peel Dawson. (He was twenty years old on June 2nd, 1838) |
