TranscriptBishops Waltham - half way between Winchester & Portsmouth
April 4th 1838.

My dearest dearest Mamma & Father,

This is the last letter you will receive from me before we sail. We are
on our march to Portsmouth and we shall board the Apollo at eleven o'clock
to-morrow. I returned from visiting dear George on Tuesday and found every
thing packed up for our departure. Poor fellow I wish I left him looking
better, but he is thin and pale.
The accommodation on board the Apollo seems to a landsman like myself
any thing but inviting and I fear that I must give up all ideas of comfort
and cleanliness till we disembark at Quebec. I feel afraid that the first
view of that Town will be most welcome to me. The two Companies who sail in
the Inconstant will not embark for a week. I write in a room filled with
Officers. You must give me credit for the warmth of my affection and
feelings in this my last letter from England. I shall never forget the
kindness I have always received from both of you but particularly on this
last occasion. The advice and directions you have given me I shall have
great pleasure in following. God bless you both - may you enjoy all the
happiness you deserve and pray remember the being whose love & attachment to
you will cease only with his existance.
Ever dearest Father & Mamma
Your most devoted Son
Robert Peel Dawson.
