Dear Mrs. Duffin:-
Thank you for your nice letter. I am glad you have received the librarian's acknowledgment of the photograph. The University made some excellent reproductions, & kindly sent me one and also I believe to Canon [Hincks?], at Haileybury. He was instrumental in getting in touch with you through the Revd. [Reverend?] Mr. Davidson.
It is wonderful what things are stored up in a persons mind. I was struggling to recall the name of Murrays Terrace until your letter
came along.
I am Johnnie Ready & there are two others left. Harry in Montreal is a victim to rheumatism and his disposition is quite a problem as he is quite crippled. We have him living with a woman who has been a nurse
and seems to have done him good but he will never be any use. He neglected
his condition and we heard nothing of him for years.
My sister Mary is married to a retired clergyman & at present they are at St. Petersburg, Florida. She is occupied with a summer cough in the New Hampshire mountains during the summer & then goes south for the winter to rest. Her son-in-law is proprietor of the camp and seems to be making it a success. She has a son & four daughters 2 of whom are married - My other
sister Isabel, died about 2 years ago, and I fear her husband is about to
follow her. We are very anxious about him at present. He is Canon [V?]ial of Lennoxville P.O. & my daughter Alice has been with him since the death of his wife.
As regards my own family. We had 8 children. My eldest son [Fr?]ed was killed in the war at [Oxxy?] His younger brother came through without a a scratch & with honours. M.C. [Military Cross?] with bar and D.S.O. [Distinguished Service Order?] He unfortunately got double pneumonia as everything was over and lost his majority to which he would have been entitled. Two of my daughters are married. The eldest Nellie lives in Montreal with her husband & two daughters. She is going to England with one of them, who is about to be married. Then Amy lives in Toronto. She has a step daughter but no children of her own. My second & fourth daughters live with me and John who is married but without any family lives in Toronto also. My youngest daughter and her children lost their lives in a fire in
a summer cottage some 12 years ago. Her husband H.G. Pe[pall?], married again to a charming woman and Eileen the sole survivor lives with them. They have a nice property some 20 miles away but she motors in every day to follow a course at the University, & then drives her father home from town.
Sir Felix and Basil Ready are the sons of my fathers half brother - John Tobin Ready of the Berkshire Regiment, which by the way both of my
boys were lucky enough to get commissions in, as they went across as privates.
I have now I think told you about all the Readys. No I forgot to mention Nigel, son of Basil ready, a nice young fellow who is working
in Henry Pe[pall's?] office-Bond business, but I have mentioned all my own and I fear have tried you.
I was so pleased to think you took the trouble to write me -
Believe me,
Sincerely yours,
J.A. Ready
