Transcript | New York. May 6th 1880 Dear Cousin Willie The master made a report in the New Jersey Zinc case a few days since It had been promised from month to month all winter He takes two views of the evidence taken on the Coys side and and two on Nurses Taylors' side and makes from calculations of damages from these four different ways of looking at the case. He makes us liable for from $350m to $900000, $400m + $700m being the other two sums. I was astounded at the result as I had always heard that we had a good case. It appears that the directors had secured a proposition from Taylor of a compromise and were discovering it when the Masters report came in. And they there voted to accept it. I enclose a copy of it. The assets are calculated to give us a cash dividend of 60 cents on the $ and we surrender half our stock to the other side. Yesterday they had some 6000 shares in favor of the Compromise and it will be passed without doubt We voted for it as the directors are tired of law and prefer to settle and not carry the case higher up, although they say that would get a much smaller penalty, and say the Masters report is outrageous. This is all very fine but I am afraid that Taylor has a much #PAGE 2 better case than they (our people) have ever given hin credit for and I am glad to get a settlement. They are making money, the net earnings having been Nov. $ 12.926 Dec. 13.487 Jany [January?] 14.450 Feby [February?] 20.960 Mch [March?] 23.551 April's balance is not in but it will be very good. With the other side working with us we should make large dividends. Trade is dull; business has been overdone and there is a glut of all commodities and prices have a downward tendency for the present but there will be a turn soon I think. We have done better this year up to the present than in '79 but the next 60 days may change this. Emigrants are coming from you [your?] side in enormous quantities. Crops look well and there are every where signs of great prosperity. I enclose a letter from Pilot which explains itself. Please return it all quite well. With love to you + all of yours believe me Your afft [affectionate?] cousin Roland Redmond |
