My Dear Father:-
It is now a long
time since I have written to
or received a letter from.
I think it was Bertie who
wrote to me last. I suppose
you have seen thro' [through?] the papers
about the agitation caused here
by the last election & the Silver
question. The Republican party
who won claimed that business
would be greatly stimulated right
away; but as yet there is no
sign of any improvement.
Two weeks ago I lost a position
which I have held for the last two
years and a half & altho [although?] promised
an A1 recommendation & the
first vacancy by my late employer
I see no immediate prospect of
obtaining a decent position.
I was under Drs [Doctors?] care during
part of Summer & Autumn suffering
from malaria & had to spend a lot
of money to get over it which
left me very short indeed. Could
you spare me £5 to help me.
pull thro' [through?] my difficulties.
I have broken my word so
often that I am ashamed
when I say I will repay you;
but, I will, please God, as soon
as my prospects brighten a little
& that is only a question of time.
Write me anyhow even if you
cannot spare the cash.
Sometime ago you sent me
address of two of Mrs Holland's
brothers in law by his first wife.

#PAGE 2
I did not then need to see
or write then & now I cannot
lay my hands on the addresses.
Could you have them duplicated?
The position which Mr [Wann?]
got for me I only held one
month & lost thro' [through?] not showing
up to work on time. There
was no disgrace attached to it.
I would like to approach him
again but would not do so
without your permission. His
headquarters are in St Louis Mo [Missouri?]
but he comes to New York at
regular intervals on business,
& I could find out thro' [through?] the NY [New York?]
Agents of his R.R. Co. [Rail Road Company?] when he
would be here next
Tom or Bill ought to write &
give me news about some of the
boys. I have long ago given
up hopes of hearing from Robt [Robert?].
I will write to Bertie just as
soon as I get work. Let me know how
how (sic?) your health is & that of
the rest & friends & what you
are all doing. I sent a copy
of Xmas edition of one of the
my papers & recd. [received?] a copy of
the Armagh Guardian.
I have just changed my asd [address?]
as you will see by this letter. I
hope no letter from home has
gone astray by reason of it.
I left change of address
at the district PO [Post Office?] here.
I hope you will let me
hear from you soon & give
me all the news you can
Your affectionate son
John D Reid
This letter was written on one of those
small light tables which shakes with
every movement of the pen so, pse [please?]
dont criticise my caligraphy.
