Transcript | DIRECTORY AND ADDRESSING DEPARTMENT OF THE TROW DIRECTORY, PRINTING AND BOOKBINDING COMPANY 21 - 27 UNIVERSITY, PLACE MANHATTAN To: Mr Thos [Thomas?] E. Reid 17 Dobbin St. [Street?] Armagh Ireland From: John D Reid 179 Varick St [Street?] [New York?] Apl 7 1899. My Dear Father:- I write this not that I have anything new to tell you but so as to keep up the correspondence & to notify you of my change of address to 179 Varick St. [Street?] I am now still ( now 18 mos [months?]) working with the above firm am doing fairly well but nothing to brag of. I had a letter from Bertie a few weeks ago also from Tom & Bill some time ago am very much pleased to hear from you all & hope that Tom will succeed in getting some good sit [situation?] under your new Local Govt [Government?]. Now I have asked for photos from you folks & have got Toms framed in my room along with the family group. It would please me very much indeed to have the others. Is there not one of mothers that could be sent me? Please attend to this in your next letter. I am still with Mrs McNair who has moved to larger & better rooms & have a very comfortable home. She is very motherly Irishwoman who has seen service with some of the best families in England & this Country. It is some time now since I gave up drinking & tobacco. I found the tobacco injuring me & believed it to #PAGE 2 be the cause of my drinking some times so I gave it up altogether. I am now over 32 years of age & am trying to steady up. Business is picking up since the war & good times are on the way I believe. How are things with you & how is the [cess?]? We had a very long, cold winter here & it is quite a relief to see the sun coming out strong again. I will close now as I want to drop a line to Bertie before going to bed. Will try to give you some news in my next epistle & awaiting a reply, I am, Your affectionate Son John D Reid 179 Varick St [Street?] |
