Transcript | 3122 Rhodes Ave. May 12th 88 Dear James, We have reached the Garden City and got recruited after our wanderings. We landed in N. York [New York?] in Sunday Evg [Evening?] & started for Chicago by the Erie Express on Monday Evg [evening?] at 5 o'clock. the Train arrived at 10-30 on Tuesday night & Uncle Wm [William?] was waiting for us at the station. Chicago is a fine city the buildings are large the streets wide & always thronged with waggons [wagons?]. Some of the houses are 8 stories high & some 10, & you can reach any of the floors by elevators. Our William had just gone to sea the day we arrived. Uncle William has shown us around he is not sailing yet so he spends his time with the greenhorns. I could not give you much information about the country, but from appearance, it is a fine country for working people of all descriptions. Mother stood the journey well, & was not very sick. I was not sea-sick but I was beginning to be sick of the sea, hoping to hear from you soon I shall conclude with love to you & Mrs & family Your Affectionate brother N. Shank |
