| Transcript | Chicago 5th July 1872 Dear Mother I write you a few times to let you know that we are all in good health hoping you are enjoying the same blessing you will think it stange [strange?] I did not write to you before this time but I got my right thumb badly smashed but it is better now I am stopping with bella this winter I am not working any so I have good time plenty to eat and nothing to do captain glenry [glenn?] went home this fall and sam sent you a gold ring bella sent hooks & I sent œ3 I suppose you have got it before this he would tell you about the fire we had here better than I could write Sam & I had a close shave through it but the schonner and us weathered it all right [alright?] I would went home to see you this fawl [fall?] but we bought a schooner the [they?] call her the Glad tidings She is 5 years old and will carry about 400 tons oad [load?] and cost 11 thousand dollars so it took all my money but I might have enough next fawl [fall?] to pay my passage I send you some of my pictures you can give one to sister margret [Margaret?] and you can show me to some of the girls & see if I would suit any of them I send one pound to old Jinney Hughes you can give it to her and tell her I sent it. I had a letter from sam two days ago & his Mrs & family was in good health brother Robert Patterson is in Chicago this winter he is working at his trade theer [there?] was a son Johan Barron of glastry sailing with us last fall he got nearly drowned the night of the fire but we got him pulled out of the river in time he is in good health and working in the packing house alet [?] Keely is in good health give my best respects to Margret [Margaret?] & family and to all the neighbours I hope you put cap. [Captain?] Glema [Glenn?] on trek [track?] of nice girl I think he went home for one I have no more to say at present & remains your Son William W Shaw when you write let me know all the ups & downs 290 Main St. Chicago Illinois |
