Transcript | [Front of Envelope] Mr James A Smyth Southwoodslee Lock Box 4 Essex County Ontario Canada [Stamped] Newtownstewart D JA 12 93 Ireland [Written at top] 1893 [Back of envelope] [Stamped] Hamilton ONT 4 JA 24 93 Canada South Woodslee JA 25 93 ONT Plumbridge 0 JA 12 93 [Written at top] Rec January 26 93 [Letter 1] [Page 1] Castledamph January 12 1892 Dear Brother I once more take the pleasure of writing to you again We are all well at present hoping you are all enjoying the same We have some snow here this last week or so but I think it appears like a thaw today there is not much work doing now as long as the snow is in it There is a good deal of people Letting their land this winter it has got to be a fashion in this country Bob Ballantine had an auction on Tuesday week our William bid on the most of the land and he got three acres of it for cropping I think at £3 an acre Uncle James will have his [Page 2] Auction again Saturday so I suppose he will bid for more of his if it does not be to [too?] dear They have bought a young six quarter old mare in Gortin fair at £10 and if it does be quiet they will be able to plough a good deal with it I think if they get much of Uncle Jamess they will let the most of their own land lie lea there is nobody begun to plough about here yet but it will not be long Willie Gilkison is up in Omagh today to see if he will get into the Asylum as a Warder if he gets in he will have £18 for the first year and two pounds of and [an?] advance every year up till £32 but it is hard to know [Page 3] whether he will get in or not there is always a lot applys [applies?] for it and then they have their chance whether they are appointed or not then that does be spoke best for with magistrates and other big men has the best chance to get in there is one of Andy Campbells daughters in it as a nurse and the second one will be in again two or three months if Willie gets in we will let you know there has been no law over the fight yet it was put back this last two months on account of Reid not been [being?] able to attend with the broken leg but I think he will be able again this next [Bench?] [Page 4] he is fit to walk with crutches now, so you may guess the way he was in when that is all he is able to do yet William nor Tommy I think had nothing to do with [sic] they were in William Gilkisons and when they went out it was nearly all over It is kept a secret who was in it or who struck but them that struck knew the way to strike anyway there was a runaway on Gortin fair night and you will wonder when you hear who it was, Mary McConnell Glensass and a brother of Johnnie Cockrane [Cochrane?], so the women was [sic] scarce where he lived when he come to the Glenn This is old new years night and there is going to be a spree in Johnnie Elkins they will have Den and the fiddle so that will be something new No more this time Bella M Smyth [Written at top of Page 4] William will write next week if he gets time |
