Dear Brother
I once more take
the pleasure of writing to you again
We are all well at present hoping
you are all enjoying the same We have
some snow here this last week or so but
I think it appears like a thaw today
there is not much work doing now as
long as the snow is in it There is a good
deal of people Letting their land this
winter it has got to be a fashion in this
country Bob Ballantine had an auction on
Tuesday week our William bid on the most of
the land and he got three acres of it
for cropping I think at £3 an acre
Uncle James will have his

[Page 2]
Auction again Saturday so I suppose he
will bid for more of his if it does not
be to [too?] dear They have bought a
young six quarter old mare in Gortin
fair at £10 and if it does be quiet they
will be able to plough a good deal with
it I think if they get much of Uncle
Jamess they will let the most of their
own land lie lea there is nobody begun
to plough about here yet but it will
not be long Willie Gilkison is up in Omagh
today to see if he will get into the Asylum
as a Warder if he gets in he will have £18 for
the first year and two pounds of and [an?]
advance every year up till £32 but it is
hard to know

[Page 3]
whether he will get in or not there is always
a lot applys [applies?] for it and then they
have their chance whether they are appointed
or not then that does be spoke best for with
magistrates and other big men has the best chance
to get in there is one of Andy Campbells daughters
in it as a nurse and the second one will be in
again two or three months if Willie gets in we
will let you know there has been no law over the
fight yet it was put back this last two months
on account of Reid not been [being?] able to
attend with the broken leg but I think he will
be able again this next [Bench?]

[Page 4]

he is fit to walk with crutches now, so you
may guess the way he was in when that is all he
is able to do yet William nor Tommy I think had
nothing to do with [sic] they were in William
Gilkisons and when they went out it was nearly
all over It is kept a secret who was in it or
who struck but them that struck knew the way
to strike anyway there was a runaway on Gortin
fair night and you will wonder when you hear
who it was, Mary McConnell Glensass and a
brother of Johnnie Cockrane [Cochrane?], so
the women was [sic] scarce where he lived when he
come to the Glenn
This is old new years night and there is going
to be a spree in Johnnie Elkins they will
have Den and the fiddle so that will be
something new
No more this time
Bella M Smyth
