Transcript | Envelope Addressed t Mr James A Smyth Essex Ontario Canada Lisnascraigh Nov 6th 1906 Dear Brother Rec [Received?] your letter some time ago & learn by it that you got back safe to your old place again but I believe you are fretting a little its nearly always the case after holidays no matter how short the [they?] may be or where the [they?] are spent It takes a little while to get people back to their work again but in a month or so you will forget about it & be all right [alright?] again We are all in good health here Tommy and Davy is busy digging The Potatoes but they will finish in a few more days so that ends This seasons work I believe after That They will start the improvements around the house back street & back door & every thing else to fit that it will be nearly all work not much cost If the [they?] work hard they may have the front finished for the spring I hope so anyway. I suppose you have heard from home of Houston buying Big Roberts place he has houses enough at the present time there is a rumour that the Dr has the new house taken but Im afraid he requires the wife first Houston intends to let Big Roberts place and take about £100 a year out of it in that style. It will be easy made money. The Rector is very angry because he didn't get it but it was long enough open for anyone. Im afraid Houston will drop the creamery when he has made this purchase I expect this is the safest for his money We were up home Sunday first time for Madge & Bertie since you left Madge asked a couple of times going up Would Uncle Jim be there she has no idea of where Canada is, she thinks you can come and go like her We spent Most of the time singing & playing hymns Bob Campbell & James Gilkison was there I think Mary keeps the Piano going pretty well but they are busy enough yet unless after night Are you converted yet or have you forgotten all about it which There is a change on a good many around this place and Tommy Houston is one of them Its wonderful the change when one is Born Again When I used to talk to Tommy about saving & these Preachers he could not say more about anyone or any thing than what he would then. He didnt believe in saving nor any change & he would tell you saved peoples faults for the last thirty years And what was Mr. Steen doing if This was required Now he is on the Saviour's side & other people talking of his badness quite contrary. He said once when he was asked to go to these preachings Not if they were there for 100 years I would as soon got (sic) to hell Now he would attend if the [they?] were miles away It was Liza forced him to go to hear Mr Loney or rather got him to go so he saw he was on the wrong way & accepted Christ in a few days after & a changed man ever since David is the Moral man yet but gives in to the Gospel Ye must be born Again My Father still holds on to his own way & thinks he does not need it, Liza wont have so hard times now for she has more on her side than formerly: Mary & William are both on her side & I believe Tommy too Its little enough to do what we can while here for the Saviours sake who saved us for all Eternity I wonder how John is getting along Im sure he will see more evil than good & will be often tempted . Yesterday was Gortin Fair Tommy sold 30 sheep at £1 each he has a lot on hands yet and its getting late in the season for selling but I suppose he can keep them on if he is beat out as he has got land enough They had the young pigs over but sold none Im afraid it will be a bad year for pigs as the Potatoes are very bad everyplace [every place?] We lost a litter so I dont think it makes much difference when the sale is bad, the sow took sick & the young ones all died it would be a loss if they were selling well. I think Mother is coming down here tomorrow & stop till after Sunday she will be a stranger now I will close as I think of nothing else at present So Good Bye and I hope you are feeling content again Your sister Bella M Transcribed by Jim Buchanan |
