[Ontario?] Castledamph January 9th 1896 Dear Brother In answer to your Letter of Dec" 20th. which we received on Saturday 4th we were glad to hear from you we were expecting one before Xmas but I suppose you think you send as many as us We have very nice weather here now it would almost pass for spring and everybody is busy ploughing they will surely have the crops early enough this year William will finish the big leafield to-day and Tommy is working at drains they will have the old road in crop this spring Father is surface man to-day he is just away after dinner There is a new county surveyor and he is very sharp so they will have to keep it in good repair He was up twice at the New bridge up the water and I believe he nearly pulled it all down it did not please him at all nor any fence that was built doesn't please him he has made wrecks every place he went and has stopped a lot of peoples money he was twice on our road but it was dark both times John C and Mary and Willie John is at school every day it is coming close to their examination so they will have to attend John was at home all last week with a sore leg and he was afraid that it would keep him from putting up his day he had only 86 but he was able to go on Monday he got a thorn above his ankle going to school on Friday week and Willie Gilky took it out for him it was more than an inch long as it left him a bad leg he had to lie in bed most of the time The waterkeepers is very busy this year they are never at home we only got one fish yet and not our own either Joseph Gilky was at home three or four days at Xmas and he killed a few in spite of them and gave us one David caught James Young that time and reported him but Scott told him he had no case he only saw him at the water and was not sure what he was doing and they have Steel boy and Mickyann Falls but Im afraid they wont make much of them either David is always up the road before clear and not home till bed time he deserves eight pounds instead of four playing the violin is no notion till him now Mary and John plays a good deal now John will soon be good as Mary and has nobody to learn him he takes it all out of his own head I have no news this time I dont know what to finish with We had the Miss Dunbars up on Sunday evening and Tilda Gilky, and then they were up in Gilkisons on Tuesday night They mostly visit both houses once a week but the [they?] dont be much fun the remainder of this letter will be copied of father writing he wants to know if your teacher is a [protestant?] he says you forgot to write to the lodge but there was only one meeting since and he gives you an advice for to take care who you make for comrades and go no place that is not pleasing and we hope that you will come out [bright?] and show some people what you spent your time doing when you get back again, we have no trouble with anybody since you left, all quiet only vexed to see the Miss Dunbars coming here No more at present.
