Transcript | [Front of envelope] Mr James Alex Smyth South Woodslee Lock Box 4 Essex County Ontario Canada [Stamped] NEWTOWNSTEWART [---?] [Back of envelope] [Stamped] PLUMBRIDGE C MR 29 94 HAMILTON 10 AP 11 94 CANADA SOUTHWOODSLEE AP 12 94 [Page 1] Castledamph, March 29th 1894 Dear Brother, In answer to your letter which we received yesterday we are glad to know that you are all well as this leaves us at present, I suppose it will fall on me to answer them now for a while, father would not take time to write to-day, they are busy sowing the corn, so he will get no time to spare, we sowed the field at the bridge on monday morning that was the first, Gilkys ones had a ploughing after dinner time and they had to go there, and father went to Strabane on Tuesday and then the [they?] got sowing some yesterday and to-day [Page 2] There are some done sowing and others not right begun but we have very nice weather for it this last while. The rector had a great ploughing yesterday there was a great deal went up from this Uncle James will have one again on Saturday he is for ploughing and sowing all in the one afternoon so he will take to have good help you wanted to know in some of your letters how many sheep we had altogether I could not tell you, but William will some time, but we have three lambs the first one lambed on Easter Sunday We have got Smyths hill for a year at eight pounds and Auction fees it is dear enough but it will be useful now There is an American lady coming till Eden some of these days till Charles Gordon's she is a daughter of James Gordons [Page 3] that went over with Uncle and Aunt (but he is dead now) they are expecting her shortly now she was to come in the Winter but she went first to England and she has stopped a while there, We have heard that Sandy Stewart was going to be married to a Miss McKnickle [McNicholl?] out of this country is it true or not or do you know Miss Dunne will give you all the information she can about the teachers in this country we will try and find out what pay some others get as well as her, she is well pleased with the scholars after the examination the [this?] year, the [they?] all passed but three and she had four or five passed in bookkeeping I think all she had learning it, Mary passed in book keeping [Page 4] so that what you nor any of the rest of us never learned, she is in the second Stage of the fifth book now along with John but he did not bother with bookkeeping, he has just come in for his tea and he says to tell you that the old white faced sheep has lambed and has a ewe lamb and I suppose he is glad at that, he has to thresh all the fodder this last while and he is kept busy he is threshing hard to-day the way that he will get over till Uncle James's again Saturday We have seven cows now and three heifers and two calves we bought a cow in the Plum [Plumbridge?] fair at £8 she calved on Friday last a heifer calf we will either buy another cow or else two heifers for we have a good deal of lea grass [Page 5] Father says to tell you that they will be done sowing at home tomorrow at dinner time and then they have only two acres and a half to sow after that but they have a good deal of flax to sow and it will take more time he says that we have about three hundred unscutched yet. I may tell you that Uncle John ones was cutting turf yesterday so that is early work but they want them to burn a kiln of lime so that is the reason Uncle James is very busy this last while making a drop of the mountain dew but he is working at it far away he is getting a good deal sold for these ploughings [sic] at home [Page 6] I think I am nearly done out of news now I will hardly get it finished I suppose yous [sic] were all at Uncle at Easter I suppose you have nearly forgot about the Easter house over the burn I think the [they?] did not boil too many eggs on Sunday. [Artar?] [Art?] went by here and he was telling us that they had great accomadations [accommodations?] over in our friends and that they wanted him to stop but he did not There was a great many there last year our Tommy and John Gilkison James Barker and David Houston but there was none of them went to it on Sunday I think this may do now for it is post time Your Sister Bella M Smyth |
