[Letter 1] [Page 1] Castledamph October 23rd 1896 Dear Brother I now take the pleasure of writing to you once more after a long length of time hoping you are well I suppose it is Just a year ago today since you left here perhaps you are thinking of it yourself we were all gone to bed long ago by this time it is pretty near nine oclock now,.The weather is not very good some good days others raining we had snow on sunday fortninght but it was gone on Monday morning so [then?] their [there?] was four good days and all the corn was gathered in wet or dry Willie John is giving some old chat now at the fire he was trying to write you a letter but I think it would be french enough for you he remembers you well enough yet and well He can [Page 2] Friday Night tell all the argument [sic] you and him had he saw your scarf the other day and he said O that James scarf that he left ahind [behind?] he says it was on a chair and father was going to [make?] John follow. you all that does be said he can remember it he can dance and sing as well as ever he puts on mothers cap and handkerchief and an old shirt and the specks so then you would see a dance he is just looking at me writing [writing?] this he can sing Molly & Baby Daisy. Bell and a great deal other he is learning the wearing of the Green I will give you two line [sic] or three which he will sing out or in She saw the blue eyed Irish lad who stole her heart away. In Co Clare across the sea upon St Patrick Day [)?]. Well you need not care when you come back' to [Lay?] with Tommy he went down [Page 3] one night after you left so he never would go down again untill [until?] last night and he is going down to-night again he is telling me I am writing [fool?] [capers?] Mary has told him what I am writing about well I think I have told you enough about him I would not have told you all he say [sic] in two hours from now Gilkison [Gilkinson?] had a drawing of turf today Bella is down to-night if she had been here I would not [got?] saying so much nonsense she says you would only scold but you may if you please as I am far of your hearing. Well Dan is on foot again he is watching the burn now so he is going to be pretty [watchfull?] but their [there?] was a great deal of white trouts [sic] took out on the Plumb [Plumbridge?] fair day but I think he was told about it It is wearing round to bedtime so I shall stop tonight untill [until?] some otherday [Page 4] you have got as much news here about Willie John as will do you a good while. Willie Gilkison had a letter from you last week and James Houston and Uncle Charles got one some time ago I suppose you did not get the, [prize?],. for the address, but there is nothing like buying, the Miss McFarland is at work in New York Tilda Gilkison had a letter from Maggie and Im afraid she feels home sick, she was with the Senator of New York at that time but she has changed since, she had sixteen dollars per month with him but she was not content with the work so she changed she said she was not getting her money for doing nothing We are all well at present hoping you. are all enjoying the same Yours Bella M Smyth [Written upside down at bottom of Page 1] There is a good deal of nonsense in this letter but it [sic] better than [nothing?] |
