Dear Brother
In answer to
your letter which we rec. [received?] Friday
21st we are glad to know that
you are alright you will have
a busy time now till the exam
and I hope you will be
successful We are sorry
that you have to watch the
money so well but you should
buy anything you are in need
of and I am allowed to tell you
that if we can spare it you
will get it there is no one
counting what you take, they
are all trying to send as
much as possible but sometimes
you are kept wanting
rather long Whatever you
think on doing after the exam
you need not be afraid of the
money. It is enough to study
hard and not to worry about
money Father says to tell you
he will send some next week
and not have you scarce at
the examination I suppose it
would take a good deal to go to
Miss Ballantine [Ballantine's?] place
It is a great pity you can,t [can't?] go after
been (sic) confined to school so long
Mother is afraid you are getting
too fat she thinks you would
need more exercise and not so
much studying
We have nice weather here
since, Tommy William John
is (sic) with Uncle James to day [today?]
cutting turf he is getting along
pretty well now only he is
scarce of help yet but he will
get over that pretty soon Robert
James will soon be able to do
something Uncle Charles
is in the Infirmary a week
on Tuesday with a sore leg
he was complaining with it
a year or two ago but it was never
so bad as now he hurted [hurt it?] this time
with a [tub?] and he thinks it was
flooring on his knees that
commenced it first Aunt was up
on Saturday and there was nothing
done to it at that time. Father and
Mother was (sic) over on Sunday and
she was telling them, he was [fretting?]
badly and had to lie in bed all
the time, we have got no word
since how he is Uncle John
"Old Son" has got married on
Thursday last to a girl at Drumquin
so that is a miracle, when
he left John and Sarah I am
not sure whether he will come
half time or not,. but its [it's?] not
likley [likely?] he will come from
Drumquin to Eden and the
wife has a piece of land so
then he will be busy enough
without hiring:: Uncle John has
no other one yet nor I dont [don't?]
expect they will get anyone to
please them as well as McColgan
Knox is still in Eden he never
changed yet, he is another that
attends to his business better
than his master. We have not
much trouble with them now
they are a little quieter than
they were:: Beck is in Newtown
since Maggie died then there
are only Alice and Bella at
home now not as many as used
to be Dan Henry is coming
to live to Elkins old house at
the Bridge Old Wilson
is going to marry and he
wants the house rid-- he
chased Annie on Saturday
and she is stopping in
Elkins since and Dan says
he wont [won't] keep her he will keep
Bob but let her do for herself
so you may expect some fun
the day Old Wilson will be
married.
There is some talk about
Joe McConnell going to be
married to a Miss Crawford
a friend of his own she lives
about Gorticastle. James' [-ick-?]
says he will drive.. but he'll
have to get a nice pony some
place for Joe will have nothing
else going up to the Glenn
so they will have everything
arranged no matter whether
its [it's?] true or not
Jamey Stewart is for
America to-morrow morning
so that is strange looking
and so much for him to
do at home but I suppose
its [it's?] hard work thats
[that's?] taking him away Old Barney
Roger was nearly killed on
Wednesday he was rolling corn
and the horse ran away and
the roller went over him and
bruised him badly the priest
and Doctor was sent for and
he is not expected to recover
In regards that Daffodil
I cant [can't?] tell much about unless [sic]
seeing them at Elkins [Elkin's?] it remains
in bloom for over a week and
I think the first open's [opens?] about
the beginning of March but
the [they?] are green before that and
I suppose the [they?] bloom for about
three weeks one after another
Willie John commenced his letter
this morning and if he gets it
finished we will send it
Good Bye Bella M [Maggie?] Smyth
