Castledamph June 10th 99 Dear Brother We rec [received?] your letter of May 29th this morning and one of May 22nd on Monday last, after looking for a fortnight Father & mother thought there was something wrong & Willie John had to run every morning to see if it was come I dont think any of us told you of the Post boy going through the country now, Jamie McKernan is in for this place at 1s = 1d per day: from Aughalane to far Glenrone, but only does the half each day and any letters for the other places lies at the Plum [Plumbridge?] till the next day. Andy brings ours same as usual Matthew Smyth happened with an accident yesterday week which might have proved fatal but he got off with a broken leg, a cut on the forehead & his shoulder hurt. he was going with the horse & cart below our gate and the foal was playing in the field & frightened the horse so he became unmanagable [unmanageable?] He was not able to turn him no way so he went straight down Gilkys field and out on the lower road in the worst place he could go Matthew was thrown out there and got the wounds: & the horse went on to Joseph Mc Farlands street. where he was caught without being hurt nor the cart damaged in the least. They brought the doctor as quick as possible and tied up the leg, he came back on Sat and told him to go to the infirmary So they got Sam Dunn's spring cart [But?] a bed in it. & our three Willie Gilky John Mc Farland & Young Joseph helped to put him on, on Sunday morning. Willie, Ellen, Willie Gilky & Joe Elkin went with him to Omagh So poor Matthew happened worse this time than the scare Alice gave him. I suppose Father told you of A. Duncan's death: People are all busy now talking how he left his money and no one knows the truth yet. Some say he has no money at all that he lost it same as old Margarets and others that they [the?] two brothers & two sisters get it all & each alike but Eden people deserve more than Straughroy folk as they had more trouble with him Aunt Liza was down with Aunt Tilda for a week at that time her & Sarah Elkin went to the wake but there was no welcome for them. The [They?] were all at the funeral Archie: James, Willie John & himself but went away after dinner. So how the money is left no one knows yet unless themselves We have very warm weather here now the turf is all cut and a good deal rickled [ricked?], we cut a day in Clougherney as the [they?] are very near done on Uncle James hill and they thought better to go in [time?] Liza & Mary is away spreading them today it is far but there is no other remedy now. The band starts practising tonight for the first time The [They?] surely will agree this year to the twelfth as the time is short. They will practise Sat "evg" [evening?] Instead of Friday to suit John Charlie. But Im afraid the number will be small as the [they?] are scattered badly and has lost conceit in it John brought a new strap from Gortin at £1 he is another like you: he must have everything up to style or else he wont wear it There is no word where they are going this year yet but I expect they wont stop at home any more. I suppose History will be more notion to you on that day than drumming but its likely you will make mistakes all the while Mother says that if you had a certificate for teaching that you should come home and look for a situation in this country at middling pay: & not be so greedy & kill yourself for big pay:. Young Joe Gilky says there is no one as happy as them that has enough and none to spare, for he says A Duncan had no peace he was always afraid of loosing [losing?] a half penny. and what good was it too [to?] him now. Old John was the same and everyone that, has money has no happiness So watch you and not set your heart on money like these. Master James was up here three times: he is a great fellow for fun but I dont know what about money I think if he has enough he is not uneasy I believe he was round a good part of Ireland and look where he is stopping now. There is an excursion of Good Templars to Warrenpoint on Thursday first for 2s.6d and a Pic Nic [picnic?] in Church hill Gortin same day 6d each we might attend Gortin as it comes cheaper for three or four, We are all in good health at present and doing as well as possible So good bye [goodbye?] for the present Your Sister Bella M Smyth Saturday evg [evening?] three oclock Scanned newspaper article attached- |
