Castledamph January 22nd 04 Dear Brother Within the last week or so we have had a few marriages around this locality so before I give you any news of the weather [etc?] I will tell you who they are The first was a comorade [comrade?] girl of Mary's while she was in Mrs Nelsons [Nelson s?]. Miss [Tillie?] Moore perhaps you've heard Mary talk about her I am not sure if you saw her but perhaps you did when home however she got married Tuesday week with [Sharkie?] in Strabane to a son of Thos [Thomas?] McFarland s of [Ballymalard?] some time ago they both got saved and are going with the dippers since thats [that s?] why they had to get married with Sharkie they never enter the church now Well the other marriage is of more importance as you know the groom since you remember anything it being Jamey Gordon to one of the Miss Dicks of [Ballinsolis?] I dont [don t?] know her personally myself so I need not expect you do he came up to Eden Wed [Wednesday?] night & John Maggie & he left yesterday morning to get the knot tied in Carrick Presbyterian church they have a wonderful way with them as neither Mary [J?] [Mary Jane?] nor Tilda was there and only a couple of hours drive for either of them Mary Jane has never been back since she left her weding [wedding?] day If you & Mary had been so near when Bella got married I am sure it would (sic) been hard to kept (sic) either of you away. The Gordon (sic) are about as curious a people as lives about this place I am sure since Tilda when [went?] to Donemana six time (sic) has done her to visit her Mother & I think I would be safe in saying three. Charlie is in Pettigo this last year So we neither see nor hear about him & during the time Willie is on the R.I.C twice has done him home & I am sure he is away seven or eight years Jamey has a house furnished in Derry so we may be sure his visits will fall short from this time forth. Every night about 1 oclock [o'clock?] you will hear the bat of John threshing I think he is a lazy man as he could get through work in a better way he has some of his potatoes undug (sic) yet, always a work behind he could pay a boy but they are all so hard about money We rec [received?] a Xmas & New Year card from Tommy Hay he is still alive, but he did'nt [didn t?] send any letter only the card. Wm [William?] was in Strabane Tuesday & he met with Tillie Duncan & she was telling him they had a letter from Sarah that morning & that Bell [Belle?] had gone through an operation in Marys [Mary s?] last letter she said that she was in Woodslee & that Bell [Belle?] was unwell but not to [too?] bad so it must have been after that we have not got any word from any of you this week. Was and [wasn't?] that a terrible burning in Chicago it was dreadful to see so many lives lost I notice some Canadians were among the victims The weather is very nice for this time of the year, the birds are singing but in two months it will not be so good We had a fall of snow before the Plum [Plumbridge?] fair but it did not stay long enough. Wm [William?] has started to plough & has yoked the young horse he is as quiet as a lamb This last week our dogs was (sic) running down to McFarlands [McFarland s?] at the bridge & poor Kruger has got his leg broken or perhaps worse we can't touch him it is that sore if he would notice you coming near him he would yelp if he does not mend I am afraid we will have to end his days & he is a good dog for cows. People should watch & not revenge [avenge?] their spite on dogs. Last night we had Andy Ballantine & Master James some how [somehow?] they always happen to be in together & I like to see them as their [there?] is always a good while Master James comes once a week and as soon as he comes in he ask (sic) for the Family Herald paper & reads it all over We are only having an occassional [occasional?] paper of our own now as Sam Dunn I suppose failed to pay up & they have quit comming [coming?] we are going to start with the Weekly Irish Times & get it by post as it is very annoying to not have the news of the world at large. I hear them talk about that other war that is on the border of starting. How did you enjoy your holidays at Xmas. Mary told us about coming up for the High School Commencement she said it was something grand also that you had nice rooms I seen the account of the evg [evening?] in the Free Press quite a lot of outings over there at Xmas time. I must close now hoping to hear from you soon Mother Father Brothers & Sisters are all well and enjoying good health so that we should all be thankful for that blessing No more at present Your Sister Eliza C excuse bad writing & mistakes Transcribed by Greg Floyd |
