Transcript | Front of envelope Miss Mary Smyth. Castledamph, Plumbridge, Co. Tyrone, Ireland STAMPED ESSEX JA 24 05 [ONT?] Back of Envelope STAMPED [------?] FE [5?] 05 Essex, Ont., Jan 24 05 Dear Sister, I received your letter yesterday. I was wondering why I had not heard from home for so long as I see it was because Eliza was not well. I can see no reasonable cause why, and it has always been so, when any one is sick you won't write That is the time you should write Suppose on one of these occasions the person sick died then I would know nothing at all about it until the worst came. Such idea as this have no defence pro nor con - I was sorry to hear of Lisa sickness. Did the [she] have an operation? If not I am afraid the same will happen again. In this country operations are undertaken immediately, [Annie?] Wigle was telling me she had written you. Do you get the Free Press at all I never hear it mentioned and I was wondering if you got it. Do you mean a gold dollar or a gold $ 5 piece? My certificate does not require renewal until next December I got an increase of $50 in salary last Board meeting night making my salary $700, I have been making a great success in addressing Public meeting (sic) in the Present campaign. I have got to be a good Debater so they say at any rate. I addressed a meeting at Harrow on Friday 13th Elford 14th Monday 16. South Woodslee Thursday 19th at Leamington Friday at Ruthven Sat at Gesto, at Gesto I spoke for 1 hr and 55 minutes the longest address I made during the campaign. Last night I spoke at Comber Sayer House Windsor [---?] against Messrs Clarke M.P. and John Auld Ex M.P.P. I just got back this morning at 9.10 a little late. To night I go to Kingsville and that is the end. I have had to meet the best speaker on the reform side. It has been a very bitter campaign Very very hot fight - To morrow is polling day. and no doubt we will have a hot time in the Town Hall at night. Some people think I should take no part in political discussions. At any rate I am known now all over the county as a good Debater. Nearly all these important member (sic) of parliament tell me that I am foolish wasting my time teaching schools, So it may be possible that I shall go into politics or Law. At any rate I am going home in early part of July this years (sic) and I shall see afterwards. Now that I have another raise in salary I can afford it - This must do as I must go for Dinner I am writing this in school, I have very little time to eat - I am out every night until about 3 o clock. At Leamington we had an audience for about 500 Uncle heard me at Woodslee -. J A [James Alexander?] Smyth Transcribed by Alan Houston |
