Essex February 25th. 1897

Dear Parents Brothers & Sisters

I received your letter
on 23rd inst. Glad to know that
you are all enjoying good health,
I was pleased with that letter
of Willie Johns, but it was very
short. Surely Willie John you
have more than that to say:
What about your wee da [daddy?].
You should give me all this news
wt [with?] your next letter, I am
sorry that you have to report so many
death [sic] but every one [everyone?]
has to take their turn. I am glad to
know that John Chas. [Charles?] is such
a good player with only a years practise
When you get that melodian [melodeon?]
you have lots of music but that will
be all right

[Page 2]
I have not answered Eliza [sic] letter
yet so this will do for all concerned.
I sent one to
Jas [James?] Houston [Huston?]
last week and a paper to you people
I shall send the same paper weekly
to some one of you. You will
always get High School news in it
if nothing else. I got highest
mark in Latin examination this
week 78% you will see all marks
in the next paper. There is a
Basket Ball [Basketball?] match
here on Sat, between Essex boy [sic]
& Windsor and also a game between
Essex girls & Windsor
I am glad to know that
Joe Gilkison [Gilkinson?] is getting
along so well in his new place

[Page 3]
Did you hear any more news
from that girl E. C Ballantine
Send me her address some
time [sometime?]. I hardly know
what to fill up this letter with I
have very little new [sic] to tell.
The winter at prest. [present?]
is mild not very much freezing
enough at night to keep [sic]
the roads hard.
I suppose you people are
kept busy working at the road.
I hope you will get all your
money that you lost last time
it would be more encouraging
for you in future.
You let Jas [James?] Campbell
know that I will send him a
letter in the near future & I
will expect that he will
send me all the new [sic]
that happend [happened?] in
Bradkeel Glengaw [Glenga?] etc

[Page 4]
I should have sent him one long
ago, but it seem [sic] very hard
somehow for me to get all the
letters answered that I ought to.
I sent a good long letter to
James Houston [Huston?] so I will
not occupy much of your time in
reading this one, I am getting
along very well with my School
work for so far, We will have
weekly exams now until middle of
April. These exam [sic] are merely
a test and also the pupils get
their grading for next year.
They let the pupil know about
how he is as well as the teacher
I have taken good marks on my
Latin & Euclid [geometry?] but I do
not expect to take so high mark [sic]
on the rest, I do not know them
as thoroughly. Good Bye [Goodbye?]
to all
James A [Alexander?] Smyth

[Notes]
How is all the people I have not
heard from Uncle Charles this good
while, I suppose he is busy
How does Uncle James get along now
I never hear much of Uncle John
is uncle William Hays [Hay?] on the
police yet or did he get his pension.
I think this is all I have too [to?]
say hoping that you are all in good
health Give us all the news when
you write James Alex Smyth

-Private-
I am going to write to Miss Ballantine
soon & I will tell her I cannot go
there, You know it would cost too
much to go there and I would have
to be pretty well fixed up. I would
like to take in such a trip but
circumstances alters cases,
I am sorry to hear of some of the
news which you mentioned
I suppose they feel pretty bad over
it.

(P.S)
One of the boys of the Free Press
staff boards with me & he is
Just come in for supper. He say's
he has the paper printed so I will
post it tonight, It is now 7 31 P.M.
and I have all my lessons to get
up for to morrow [tomorrow?] J.A.S
[James Alexander Smyth?]

I took this paper for [xmas?]
Just so as I could send you the news.
It cost me jus [just?] 1 shilling
for the three months.
