As I have told you before I shall be writing on my examination that forenoon from 9 o'clock to half past eleven or from about 1 o'clock to half past three your time, I shall see the train pass here in the morning [Page 2] with the orangemen but that is all I shall see except to see them comming [coming?] back at night. I would like to see a good walk and celebration something like we saw at Newtownstewart some ten years ago. Perhaps you do not have any good ones as they must not interest themselves much about it, where they have not met for practices until almost the 12th. The orangemen go to church here next sunday evening; but there are so few of them that one almost feels ashamed to go, and a place where people think they are [no?] good except for getting drunk and such like. [Page 3] By the time this letter reaches you I expect to have written on my heaviest subject If I pull through to the 12th I am thinking I can finish easily. I have been studying hard this last week, made every day count. Entrance examination to High School finished on Friday, and tomorrow is the first form examination. I begin on friday the 7th. For the next two weeks it will be nothing but talking about exam, papers whether they have been hard or easy. I am expecting a letter from you tomorrow but I did not wait as I just thought to send [Page 4] this one for the twelfth. I was down at Woodslee last week. They are [all?] well How is Mathew Smyth getting along, It is rather a bad happening at this time of the year, where every kind of work is going on, I suppose haying is about sorted there now. It is just begun here, though not much done at it yet. I was out for a drive with Dr. J.W. Brien this morning and I notice the crops do not look extra well. I dont expect to do any harvesting this year as most of it will be finished when I quit [writing?] and I may say it does not make me at all sorry. [Page 5] When you are writing after the twelfth give me an account of all happenings. Also let me know if any of the old boys were there, I certainly would like to see them all play a few times once more. However I couldnt say that they thought. So much of me for when I sent word to them all to come to practise when I was home very few of them attended. If we are all spared to this time next year I may be able to take a trip home in the holidays In the meantime they had better practise up so that they can play good when I see them. [Page 6] Give my best wishes to all my acquaintances and let them know that I am well (though I may feel sick that morning if I get a hard paper) and I wish that they all have a good time celebrating King William [sic] victory. Most probably I shall be answering some question that day concerning his victory and concerning the desposition of James and the Bill Of Rights, all of which events and many were important ones - happened at that time, It is a very important period in English History. [Page 7] If I am asked anything about that period, I think I can answered [answer] it. I wrote a letter last week so you are getting your share. I think I mentioned in my last that I needed more money. I am just out, after this order, do not send anymore until I ask for it unless you want me to spend it and go on a visit somewhere. Good bye to all, wishing you a merry Xmas. James A Smyth Transcribed by Greg Floyd |
