Transcript | [Front of envelope] Mr John Jas. Smyth, Castledamph, Plumbridge, Co. Tyrone, Ireland [Stamped] ESSEX JY 03 00 ONT. [Back of Envelope] [Stamped] [---?] [Newtownstewart?] [Page 1] Essex, Ont., [Ontario?] 1st July 1900 Dear Father & Mother, Although it is almost time to be in bed yet I think I shall write this letter tonight as I may not have time tomorrow. I intend going to a Dominion Day celebration at Amherstburg, so I would hardy [hardly?] have time in the morning. When Belle get [sic] there she can give you the location of any place I mention henceforth I expect some of you shall have seen her by the time this letter reaches you. I thought the vessel would have been reported at [Moville?] in two days paper but it was not. probably it will be tomorrow. I was telling her she would be in Ireland for the twelfth of July. So I hope she sees something worth seeing and perhaps see [sic] some respectable orangemen. I am just after coming back from marching with the Essex Lodge to church tonight. They are certainly [Page 2] a good many seedy looking members but I made up my mind I would walk with them if they were even worse as long as I think the order is all right. We are going to chatham on the twelfth [of?] July. I am going also and see [sic] what kind of a time they have as this is the only chance since I left home last. The other years past I was always writing on examinations so could not go. I have been wondering this week why I got no letters from nobody I think I must pick up a few new one [ones] in order to get any news from that place. When you see Belle you can tell her to write me an account of her impressions of the country the people the manner etc. and you can supplement it with any other remarks. I saw Aunt and Cassie in town on Friday I was talking to them for a while [Page 3] I suppose it will be about the twelfth when you receive this letter so you can remember me to all my old friends and acquaintances. Let them know I am well and that my arrangements, all being, well I shall be with them next year. I hope they can show a good band and etc by that time. I am busy now correcting exam papers. I shall finish up in another day I think about fourteen of my pupils may pass. I read papers all day yesterday and part of Friday and I plucked a few of the poor ones. We had exams for promotions all this week at school. so these are their papers. that I am reading I was principal of the school this week and I gave a pupil a good shaking up one day and the pupil (sic) father was going for me about it so I finally told him to make his best of it. Next Sept. if the same pupil comes back to my room I shall expell [expel?] him and that may teach parent and son a lesson. [Page 4] There is always some good for nothing scamps in every school and this boy is one of them but I shall train him up before I am through with him unless he passes his exam, (which is very doubtful) and then he goes to the Principal's room. The Principal was at High School this week as presiding examiner so I chief cook (sic) and bottle washer in our school. "I was monarch of all I surveyed, and my right three was none to [too] desperate" Sara Duncan and Annie was in my room one day last week on a visit. I think I shall be in Woodslee by the end of the week for a few days. You may write Woodslee or Essex. Just as you please. I think this is all at present hoping you have an enjoyable twelfth and a pleasant time. J.A. [James Alexander?] Smyth Don't find fault with my writing it is all right if you can make it [out?] Jas [James?] Transcribed by Alan Houston |
