| Transcript | [No envelope] [Page 1] South Woodslee Oct. 4. 1898 Dear Sister In answer to your letter which I received Sept 28 I am glad to say that we are all well I did not go to the Worlds Fair when I told you but I will be going in about three hours from now Sarah, Belle, Cassie Willie John and me we are all going to night [tonight?] at 6 o clock [o'clock?] thier [there?] was 3 or 4 people went this morning they say it is grand I will be able to tell you more in about a week I will take a ride on the Ferris Wheel I suppose you have read about it I did not get a pass There is excursions every Wednsday [Wednesday?] and Saturday It is single fare for the round trip $8.40 cents from Woodslee We are expecting to have a good time I am working at Essex now I was here Saturday to Monday I will be off work now for about ten days In regards to what Alice Duncan says or any other one I do not care Railroading is as respectable a work as any other I suppose they dont think much of Charley Allison he is just at [sic] Railroad only on a different branch of work Tell them that if we do work on a Railroad we have got lots of money Charles Allison has built a house that they have not got If railroading was not respectable I would not be at it But I will tell you what is not respectable that is keeping a public House the lowest work in this Country so just tell them that dont pay no attention to what they say I am just as good as they are and I will railroad as long as I like and quite [quit?] when I like tell them that No more at present I must get ready now good bye James A Smyth [Top of page 4] I will give yous [you?] all the news when I come back going through those building [buildings?] some of them covers 60 acres bigger than all [our?] [farm?].
